According to one embodiment, a microwave photonic band-stop (MPBS) filter uses an electrical input signal to drive an optical Mach-Zehnder modulator. A modulated optical carrier produced by the modulator is applied to an optical filter having at least two tunable spectral attenuation bands that are located substantially symmetrically on either side of the carrier frequency. The resulting filtered optical signal is applied to an optical-to-electrical (O/E) converter to produce an electrical output signal.

CMOS-compatible tunable microwave photonic band-stop filter

Various embodiments provide an apparatus and a method for operating the apparatus. The apparatus, in one embodiment, may include an optical waveguide located over a substrate, the optical waveguide having a first segment and a second segment. The apparatus may further include a single heating element configured to heat both the first segment and the second segment, wherein a light propagation direction at a point in the second segment differs by at least 90 degrees with respect to a light propagation direction at the point in the first segment.

Thermo-optic tuning of a multi-directional optical waveguide

The present invention provides an optical waveguide modulator. In one embodiment, the optical waveguide modulator includes a semiconductor planar optical waveguide core and doped semiconductor connecting paths located adjacent opposite sides of the core and capable of applying a voltage across the core. The optical waveguide core and connecting paths form a structure having back-to-back PN semiconductor junctions. In another embodiment, the optical waveguide modulator includes a semiconductor optical waveguide core including a ridge portion wherein the ridge portion has at least one PN semiconductor junction located therein. The optical waveguide modulator also includes one or more doped semiconductor connecting paths located laterally adjacent the ridge portion and capable of applying a voltage to the ridge portion.

The present invention provides an apparatus and method for operation therefore. The apparatus, in one embodiment, includes an optical coupling structure disposed within a cladding region, wherein the optical coupling structure includes a first guiding portion and a second guiding portion. In this embodiment the first guiding portion has a first end proximate a core of a planar waveguide, and a second end proximate the second guiding portion and having a first thickness. Moreover, in this embodiment the second guiding portion has a first end proximate the first guiding portion and a second end, the second end of the second guiding portion having a second thickness less than the first thickness.

Optical modulator devices exhibiting improved response characteristics are constructed from a ring resonator having a tunable loss element positioned within the ring resonator structure and one or more phase shifters. An improved lithographic process for fabricating articles comprising photonic band gap materials with micron-scale periodicities is provided, the process readily capable of being performed by current lithographic processes and equipment. The process involves providing a three-dimensional structure made up of a plurality of stacked layers, where each layer contains a substantially planar lattice of shapes of a first material, typically silicon, with interstices between the shapes. Each shape contacts at least one shape of an adjacent layer, the interstices throughout the plurality of layers are interconnected, and the interstices comprise a second material, e.g., silicon dioxide. Typically, the second material is etched from the interconnected interstices to provide a structure of the first material and air, this structure designed to provide a particular photonic band gap.

An apparatus and method for performing chemical-mechanical polishing is disclosed in which the pad is secured to the platen without the use of adhesives. A polishing pad and a platen are secured together by a releasable attractive force; the force may comprise a vacuum or electromagnetic force, and the pad has a hard or magnetic backside layer for facing the plating and responding to the attractive force. This invention has particular application to chemical-mechanical polishing for use in planarizing dielectrics.

The invention provides an improved process for determining the characteristics of dispersed particles. The process involves directing waves (acoustic or light) into a dispersion, and measuring the attenuation of the waves for particular frequencies to provide an attenuation spectrum. The measured attenuation spectrum is then compared to a set of theory-based calculated attenuation spectra to determine the particle size distribution corresponding to the measured attenuation spectrum. Unlike previous processes, the particle size distribution is capable of being accurately determined by a single inversion algorithm, thus eliminating burdensome steps of previous methods.

The invention provides an alternative to conventional sol-gel methods that utilize undesirably high amounts of a stabilizing agent such as TMAH and a gelling agent such as methyl formate. The method involves the steps of (a) providing a colloidal silica dispersion containing a stabilizing/gelling agent, where only a portion of the molecules of the agent ionize, and (b) subsequently adding to the silica dispersion a pH-reducing additive. The stabilizing/gelling agent has a dual function. The agent, e.g., an amine, initially acts as a stabilizer in the silica dispersion in that a portion of its molecules ionize, while an appreciable amount of the agent remains non-ionized. The agent later transforms in situ to a gelling agent upon addition of a pH-reducing additive. Specifically, as the pH-reducing additive lowers the pH to values at or around the pK.sub.a of the stabilizing/gelling agent, more of the agent's molecules are ionized, these cations contributing to charge neutralization, and thus gellation, of the colloidal silica particles.
