A novel method of manufacturing a golf ball. A golf ball made with this invention exhibits the characteristic feel and playability of a balata cover with superior durability characteristics (cut and shear resistance) which exceed those of a balata or ionomer cover.

Method for manufacturing two and three piece golf balls constructed from polyurethane material

A novel composition useful for golf ball covers that comprises a blend of a dilsocyanate/polyol polyurethane prepolymer with a curing agent comprising a blend of slow-reacting diamine with a fast-reacting diamine such as dimethylthio 2,4-toluenediamine and diethyl 2,4-toluenediamine, respectively. A golf ball cover made with this composition exhibits the characteristic feel and playability of a balata cover with superior durability characteristics (cut and shear resistance) which exceed those of a balata or ionomer cover.

Polyurethane material for two and three piece golf balls and method

A two piece golf ball has a core compression in the range of 75 PGA to 89 PGA, a core diameter in the range of about 1.535 inches to 1.545 inches, a cover hardness in the range of 42 to 60 Shore D, and a dimple pattern based on the geometry of a icosahedron. An uninterrupted equatorial great circle path, corresponding to a mold parting line, is provided in the design for forming a cover of the golf ball in two parts. A ball having such characteristics exhibits superior distance performance without compromising shot-making feel.

High performance two piece golf ball

A urethane-covered three-piece golf ball with a liquid-filled center, having a combination of center weight, thread windings, dimple configuration and compression that allows it to travel great distances, and to match the classic feel of 'Balata' balls, said combination at the same time complying with USGA regulations.

Polyurethane covered three-piece golf ball

The golf ball comprises all known cores provided with a cover produced by a polymer blend that combines the durability of a conventional cover with the feel of a traditional balata cover having a plurality of dimples in a modified dodecahedron pattern. The dodecahedron consists of twelve pentagons, which are subdivided into a total of sixty triangles. The triangles are then further subdivided into rows into which various diameter dimples are placed. The dimple pattern can be arranged to produce a pattern of ten great circles, which are free of dimples. The cover formulation is a blend of various ethylene/methacrylic acid copolymers wherein at least one copolymer has a high modulus and at least one copolymer has a moderate modulus forming a miscible blend having a PDI index that maximizes durability while still maintaining feel and playability.

A two piece golf ball has a core compression in the range of 67 PGA to 77 PGA, a core diameter in the range of about 1.535 inches to 1.545 inches, a cover hardness in the range of 65 to 71 Shore D, and a dimple pattern based on the geometry of a rhombicosadodecahedron. A two piece golf ball has a core compression in the range of 77 PGA to 87 PGA, a core diameter in the range of about 1.535 inches to 1.545 inches, a cover hardness in the range of 53 to 59 Shore D, and a dimple pattern based on the geometry of a rhombicosadodecahedron. An uninterrupted equatorial great circle path, corresponding to a mold parting line, is provided in the design for forming a cover of the golf ball in two parts. A ball having such characteristics exhibits superior distance performance without compromising shot-making feel.

Elastic core golf ball

Two and three piece golf balls having improved rebound characteristics include cores and centers, respectively, that are comprised of polybutadiene rubber and inorganic fillers with specific gravities of about 5.4 or greater. The inorganic fillers may be selected from tungsten, bismuth, copper, bismuth oxide, nickel, cobalt, iron, steel, tin, chromium, zinc, bismuth subcarbonate, cupric oxide, barium tungstate, cuprous oxide or ferrous oxide.

Heavy filler in golf ball cores

A thread-wound golf ball comprising a large, heavy center with rubber thread windings and a cover is disclosed. The center has a diameter of about between 1.40&Prime; and 1.53&Prime;, a weight of about between 24-34 g and a deformation of about between 0.080-0.160&Prime; when subjected to a 200 lb. load. The cover is a thermosetting or thermoplastic material with a hardness range between 40-70 Shore D. A golf ball according to the invention exhibits the combined superior characteristics of two-piece and three-piece golf balls, i.e., ease of manufacture, feel, playability, durability and distance travel.
