According to an aspect of an embodiment, operations may include receiving a first Ethernet signal having a first data rate less than a second data rate, the second data rate being a ZR data rate. The operations may also include dividing the first Ethernet signal into a plurality of first-signal sub-signals that each have a third data rate that is less than the first data rate. Moreover, the operations may include generating a second Ethernet signal having the second data rate, the generating of the second Ethernet signal being based on the plurality of first-signal sub-signals such that the second Ethernet signal includes the plurality of first-signal sub-signals. Further, the operations may include providing the second Ethernet signal to a ZR network such that the second Ethernet signal is a ZR signal.

Methods and systems for Ethernet fabric protection in a disaggregated OTN switching system that include PIU modules each having multiple ports for OTN to Ethernet transceiving and an Ethernet fabric as a switching core are disclosed. An OTN over Ethernet module in each of the PIU modules may enable various OTN functionality to be realized using the Ethernet fabric which may include multiple Ethernet fabric planes. A PIU module may transmit Ethernet packets using a first working port over a first Ethernet fabric plane and may transmit Ethernet packets using a second working port over a second Ethernet fabric plane. When the PIU module detects a fault condition on the second Ethernet fabric plane, the PIU module may transmit Ethernet packets using a third protection port over the first Ethernet fabric plane instead of using the second working port.

An example embodiment includes a network element. The network element includes an ingress port, an ingress line card, a link aggregation group (LAG) including multiple egress ports, and a distributor. The ingress port receives multiple packets including flood traffic. The ingress line card separates the packets into buckets. The distributor is configured to allocate the buckets to the egress ports, transmit the buckets to the egress ports, and when a failed egress port is identified, reallocate the buckets from the failed egress port to at least one functional egress port while continuing to transmit the buckets to functional egress ports of the LAG.

Routing around intra-network element (intra-NE) disconnectivity is described. The routing is performed on one or more network element (NEs) of a channelized network. The routing involves performing a shortest-path-search (SPS) to determine a shortest non-disconnected path from a single path-ingress edge to a single path-egress edge. The SPS includes classifying a set of endpoints of each NE in the channelized network as an equivalence class of endpoints, classifying a set of paths-so-far between each NE in the channelized network as an equivalence class of paths-so-far, grouping each equivalence class of paths-so-far by the equivalence class of endpoints that includes a terminal endpoint of the path-so-far that is furthest from the single path-ingress edge, and exploring separately each equivalence class of edges that are incident to each NE when determining the shortest non-disconnected path from the single path-ingress edge to the single path-egress edge.

Systems and methods for identifying a fault location in an optical network are disclosed. In accordance with one embodiment of the present disclosure, a method for identifying a fault location in an optical network comprises monitoring, by a network element, an eastward optical path and a westward optical path for faults. The method further comprises transmitting, by the network element, a first data packet along the eastward path and a second data packet along the westward path. The first and second data packets comprise an eastward fault indicator and a westward fault indicator comprising information associated with any eastward or westward faults occurring on the eastward or westward paths. The fault indicators indicate the existence of an eastward or westward fault and the network element that detected the fault.

In particular embodiments, a network element filters information sent to a neighboring network element. In the embodiments, the core network element may determine whether the neighboring network element is an edge network element or a core network element. If the neighboring network element is an edge network element, the core network element may set a filter, remove traffic engineering information according to the filter, and send the remaining information to the neighboring network element.
