A suture needle apparatus includes a needle body and a radio-frequency identification ('RFID') chip disposed proximate to the needle body. The RFID chip is encoded with an identifying information associated with the suture needle apparatus. The RFID chip includes an electromagnetic coupling element. A suture thread is operatively coupled to the needle body. At least one of the needle body and the suture thread is an antenna selectively electromagnetically coupled to the RFID chip and, when coupled, is configured to wirelessly communicate the identifying information responsive to radio-frequency interrogation of the suture needle apparatus. A method of providing a suture needle apparatus is also disclosed.

An agent activated non-metal antenna for an ultra-high frequency (UHF) wireless sensor having a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag in electronic communication with the non-metal antenna, and a wireless data communication integrated circuit (IC), includes a conductive stimuli-responsive hydrogel material configured to be inactive prior to an interaction with an activating agent and active upon the interaction with the activating agent. The antenna is further configured to transmit power to turn on the wireless data communication IC only when the non-metal antenna is active upon interaction with the activating agent.

According to various aspects, a new concept of Steady-State Visually Evoked Potential (SSVEP) based Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) is described where brain-computer communication occurs by capturing SSVEP induced by consciously imperceptible visual stimuli integrated into, for example, a virtual scene. These consciously imperceptible visual stimuli are able to convey subliminal information to a computer. In various embodiments, computer based operations can be mapped to visual elements with associated flickering stimuli, and induced SSVEP can be detected when the user focused upon them. In various embodiments, these visual elements can be introduced into existing display without any perceivable change to content being displayed.

A method for measuring one or more quantities characterizing a composition of a medium includes causing a first non-uniform spatially varying optical signal to impinge on a portion of the medium, processing a second optical signal emitted from the medium in response to the first optical signal including determining characteristics of a spatial variation of the second optical signal, and determining the one or more quantities characterizing the composition of the medium based on the characteristics of the spatial variation of the second optical signal.

Systems and methods are provided for managing data proxies. The systems and methods enable a proxy management system to store and manage data proxies that digitally represent real-world objects equipped with sensors. The data proxy of an object is made up of data sampled by the object's sensors and data estimated using the sampled data. The sampling rate at which the data is sampled can be optimized such that it conforms with target quality of data (QoD) requirements and/or target data acquisition costs. The QoD requirements can be based on requirements set by each of the applications associated with an object. The proxy management system can use the sampled data and estimated data to (1) ensure that incoming messages, if executed, would not have negative consequences; and (2) monitor objects to determine if and when they are expected to approach undesirable states, or if they have already reached such undesirable states.

This document describes an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) configured to navigate an unmanned aerial vehicle highway. The UAV includes a navigation system that includes a sensor, configured to gather environmental data, and a computing system configured to navigate the UAV. The computing system compares the environmental data to a specified data signature in the one or more spectra and determines a position of the unmanned aerial vehicle in the unmanned aerial vehicle highway. The UAV includes a hybrid generator system including an engine configured to generate mechanical energy and a generator motor coupled to the engine and configured to generate electrical energy from the mechanical energy generated by the engine. The UAV includes a rotor motor configured to drive a propeller to rotate. The navigation system is powered by the electrical energy generated by the generator motor.

A system and method for accurately detecting contact between two objects in a medium comprises at least one sensor for detecting vibration of a first of the two objects and a central processing unit (CPU) for receiving an output of the at least one sensor, wherein the CPU performs the steps: converting the output of the sensor into digital form; during a calibration phase, changing the data from time domain to frequency domain; and during the calibration phase, determining a first frequency range associated with actual contact between the two objects, and a second frequency range associated with a false positive contact between the two objects. A signal processor is provided for filtering all data except that which falls within the first frequency range so as to confirm actual contact between the objects.

System and method for discriminating between origins of vibrations in an object and determination of contact between blunt bodies traveling in a medium

Methods of forming shaped structures on a surface are provided. The methods utilize 3D stencils in conjunction with depositing material(s) on a surface. The surface can be non-planar. In some exemplary embodiments, a method of forming a shaped structure on a surface includes placing a 3D stencil onto a non-planar surface such that a non-planar facing side of the stencil conformally covers the non-planar surface, and depositing a material onto the non-planar surface over which the 3D stencil is placed. The deposited material becomes the shaped structure that has at least a layer facing the non-planar surface that conforms to such surface. At least the non-planar facing side of the stencil maintains the shape that is congruent with the non-planar surface when no force is applied to both the non-planar facing side and an opposed opposing side of the stencil. Stencils, stencil masks, kits, and other methods are also provided.

An unmanned aerial vehicle comprising at least one rotor motor. The rotor motor is powered by a micro hybrid generation system. The micro hybrid generator system comprises a rechargeable battery configured to provide power to the at least one rotor motor, a small engine configured to generate mechanical power, a generator motor coupled to the small engine and configured to generate AC power using the mechanical power generated by the small engine, a bridge rectifier configured to convert the AC power generated by the generator motor to DC power and provide the DC power to either or both the rechargeable battery and the at least one rotor motor, and an electronic control unit configured to control a throttle of the small engine based, at least in part, on a power demand of at least one load, the at least one load including the at least one rotor motor.

A system for analyzing fluid includes a housing having first and second opposing surfaces spaced to form a fluid chamber, a light source disposed to direct light at the first surface of the housing; and a digital imaging circuit disposed to detect light at the second surface of the housing. The digital imaging circuit includes a pixel array configured to capture one or more digital images of an illuminated fluid. The system also includes a processor configured to: capture multiple digital images of the fluid at different camera exposure levels, calculate a net radiant energy value at a plurality of different integration times within at least two images, calculate a slope of the net radiant energy value with respect to integration time in a selected image, and determine size distribution and volume fraction of particles within the fluid based on the calculated slope.
