A portable communication device includes a base, an intermediate portion and a top portion that are operatively coupled by a combination hinge assembly. The combination hinge assembly is configured to facilitate sliding motion between the base and the intermediate portion and rotation between the base and the top portion. The base, intermediate portion and top portion may be configured to include respective displays and/or touch input devices to provide a portable communication device with increased display area and/or control area with a smaller footprint often associated with conventional clamshell or slider portable communication devices.

Portable communication device having a combined slider and flip hinge assembly

A hinge assembly includes a first frame member having two spaced-apart portions with a first pair of opposing cam slots defining a first cam path. A second frame member has two spaced-apart portions with a second pair of opposing cam slots defining a second cam path and a second cam pin in the second pair of opposing cam slots. A first cam pin is in the first pair of opposing cam slots and moves along the pin cam path. A second cam pin is in the second pair of opposing cam slots and moves along the second cam path. The frame members are configured to move between a closed position and an open position as the first and second cam pins move in the respective first and second cam paths when the first and second frame members are rotated between the closed position and the open position.

Hinge assemblies for mobile terminals

A mobile terminal that allows sliding between housings in two directions. The housings may slide in longitudinal and lateral relative directions. One position, for example, may be for PDA use with an alphanumeric keypad exposed and another position may be for phone use with a numeric keypad exposed. One housing may include pins that extend from one surface and another housing may include grooves in an opposing surface to receive the pins. At least one longitudinal groove may be provided, and in one embodiment two lateral grooves are provided to accommodate two longitudinally aligned pins. An overlay may be provided that may be exposed to cover keys with numbers or navigation indications when the housings slide longitudinally and may remain hidden when the housings slide laterally with respect to each other. A casing may be provided that substantially encloses the bottom housing when in the closed position.
