An efficient, low pressure drop biocide cartridge is provided for destroying viral and bacterial pathogens in water from untreated water sources along a lengthened flow pathway including a critical plenum for controlling the speed of water throughput. In a first pathway, water is percolated through a turbulatable bed of biocidally-effective material. In flow pathway, channeling and pressure drop are reduced by radial flow across a columnar bed presenting a large surface area at an outer diameter. The cartridge may be connected with a lightweight hand-held pump. A sealing strap is provided for wet storage of any biocide cartridge.

Biocide filter

A portable, manually-operated water filtration pump for purifying water. The pump includes an inexpensive, disposable filter cartridge which can be easily changed when the filter elements are no longer effective. The pump uses a lever to actuate a double-acting piston. The lever is collapsible to one side of the pump for compact storage. The filter cartridge is a tubular cylinder having an inner bore forming the pump cylinder. A cylindrical mechanical filter is concentric with and adjacent to the inner bore to filter out particulates larger than 0.3 microns. A fluidized granual activated carbon filter surrounds the mechanical filter to absorb halogen and halogen-related compounds such as herbicides and pesticides. The pump pumps filtered water into a bottle adaptor which will fit most standard water containers. A prefilter is provided to screen out large particulates from the pump to enhance the life of the filter elements. The prefilter is shaped such that it will sink in water sources and to keep the prefilter inlet substantially upright in still water and tilted from horizontal in moving water.

Compact water filtration and purification pump

A tape transport which is sized to fit within an 8 inch form factor or footprint, to accommodate prevailing mini/micro computer applications, and including operative components which are capable of automatically receiving IBM Corporation's 3480-type tape cartridge and the web of tape which it contains for appropriate introduction to the transport for presentation to a high performance magnetic recording head. This permits a use of the 3480 tape cartridge in a transport apparatus which is capable of fitting within an 8 inch form factor or footprint, and which is therfore acceptable for use in connection with many mini/micro computer applications, yet which is capable of providing high performance (parallel track, high transfer rate) storage and retrieval due to its compatability (and interchangeability) with the format used by the IBM Corporation in connection with its 3480 tape cartridge.

Transport apparatus for a single reel tape cartridge

A magnetic tape cartridge is disclosed, which cartridge includes a single rotatably mounted reel. The reel is mounted within the cartridge in a manner which prevents it from rotating until the cartridge is loaded into a tape transport device. Additionally, the reel is mounted within the cartridge so that it is substantially self-centering when loaded into a tape transport device. The cartridge includes a door which is normally closed, but which is automatically opened when the cartridge is inserted into the tape transport device. When the door of the cartridge is opened it provides access to the tape in the cartridge.

Tape cartridge

A method of making a thin film magnetic head assembly having a substrate, superstrate and thin film magnetic transducer mounted therebetween wherein the thin film magnetic transducer includes conductive leads located interior to and extending between the substrate and superstrate comprising the steps of mounting a thin film transducer on the substrate with the transducing portion thereof located adjacent one edge of the substrate, positioning a preformed planar conductive connecting member formed of an elongated support section and a plurality of spaced, aligned connecting elements having a relatively thin coating of diffusable conductive metal coating located on one side positioned in intimate contact with the conductive leads with the connecting elements and the elongated support section extending passed the substrate, placing a superstrate in alignment with the substrate, thin film magnetic transducer and planar conductive connecting member with the surface thereof in intimate engagement with the connecting elements to form a sub-assembly thereof having a predetermined space which has a dimension equal to the sum of the thickness of one of the conductive leads, the planar conductive connecting member and the thickness of the diffusable conductive metal coating thereon, placing a quantity of insulating material adjacent the spaced opposed edges and in the vicinity of the transducing portion of the thin film magnetic transducer, heating the sub-assembly, urging the superstrate and the substrate together with a clamping force enabling the diffusable conductive metal coating to diffuse into both the conductive leads and connecting elements.

Method of making a thin film magnetic head assembly with multiconductive

A pneumatic radius sensor is embodied in a fluid bearing, such as an air bearing for a tape transport, to determine the radius of tape wrapped on an adjacent supply or take up reel. The sensor includes a chamber in fluid communication through a plurality of metered orifii to the region of the changing wrap angle of the tape on the air bearing, the plurality of orifii being arranged to provide an essentially linear relationship between pressure in the chamber and the wrap angle of the tape. Pressure sensing means in the chamber senses the pressure therein, so the radius of tape on the adjacent reel can be determined.

Pneumatic radius sensor

A tension sensor is placed within a fluid bearing supporting a flexible tape at least partially wrapped around the periphery thereof. The bearing includes a source of pressurized fluid, such as air, and a plurality of metered orifii for admitting fluid into the region of the periphery to support the tape on a fluid bearing. The sensor includes a chamber and at least two metered orifice means, one in communication with the region of pressurized fluid supporting the tape and the other in communication with the source of pressurized fluid. A pressure sensor senses the pressure within the chamber, the pressure being directly proportional to the tension in the tape.

Pneumatic tension sensor

A rotatable cleaning element having a resilient, porous material disposed on the outer surface thereof is mounted in a foil bearing so that the surface of the porous material protrudes above the bearing surface. The interior of the bearing is maintained at a negative pressure, and a jet of pressurized air disposed within the rotatable element. When magnetic tape is transported over the bearing surface, the tape makes contact with and slightly compresses the porous material. As the cleaning element rotates successive areas of the porous material is brought into contact with the tape. Compression of the material causes the pores thereof to expand slightly, and engage foreign material on the tape surface. The pores contract as the material breaks contact with the tape to encapture the foreign material. The foreign matter thus accumulated is subsequently blown free of the porous material by a jet of air directed from within the rotatable body.

Apparatus for cleaning back surface of magnetic tape

Cleaning apparatus for removing foreign material from the front or oxide-covered surface of a magnetic recording tape. A sharp edged blade is mounted near a pad of open-cell reticulated foam material, and in close proximity to the front surface of a magnetic tape. A source of negative pressure is coupled to the region of the blade and cell and when actuated serves to draw the tape against the blade and foam material. Foreign material removed from the surface of the tape is embedded in the foam pad, and collected upon the blade. Air flow effected by the negative pressure area serves to transport some of the contaminants away from the region about the blade and foam pad.
