Devices () for burnishing a surface () on an object () includes a body () having a passageway (), an accumulator piston () mounted on the body for sealed sliding movement within the passageway, a coarse adjustment screw () mounted on the body, a resilient member () acting between the coarse adjustment screw and the accumulator piston, a lever () mounted on the body, a chamber () communicating with the accumulator piston, an actuator piston () mounted on the body for sealed sliding movement within a cylindrical opening () toward and away from the rearward portion () of the lever, and a roll () rotatably mounted on the forward portion () of the lever. The devices are adapted to be mounted on a machine tool () and moved toward the object to burnish the surface with controllable force along the required length of the surface.

Burnishing devices adapted for use in small diameter pipes

The present invention provides certain additional improvements for such mechanical-type multi-axis machine tools. These improvements include: (1) permitting the spindles to be rotated about their respective axes relative to the member independently of one another, (2) providing a low-cost, and yet highly-effective, sensor apparatus for determining the angular position of the member relative to the frame without the use of an expensive encoder or the like, (3) mounting the rotatable member more precisely relative to the frame, and (4) providing a zero-backlash tool slide on the frame for imparting an action to a workpiece.

An improved spindle assembly for a Davenport&#xae; multi-axis screw machine is adapted to adequately hold one-inch round bar-stock in a collet against movement relative thereto attributable to machining operations performed on a cantilevered length of bar-stock held in and extending beyond the collet. The spindle assembly may permit the use of the screw machine on materials thought heretofore to be too difficult to machine on a screw machine. Cam surfaces on the inner spindle and collet may be coated with a low-friction material. A stress-relieving connection between the inner spindle and collet is provided.

Large-capacity spindle assemblies and collets for use in davenport multi-spindle screw machines

A device () for root-rolling a thread (T) on an object (O) includes: a body (), an accumulator piston () mounted for sealed sliding movement within a body passageway (), a coarse adjustment screw () threaded onto the body, a Belleville spring stack () compressed between the coarse adjustment screw and the accumulator piston, an actuator piston (A orB) mounted for sealed sliding movement within a cylindrical opening () in the body, and a thread roll () rotatably mounted on the actuator piston. A fine adjustment screw is threaded () into a first opening () on the body, and communicates with a fluid chamber between the accumulator and actuator pistons. The positions of the coarse and fine adjustment screws may be selectively adjusted to controllably vary the fluid pressure within the chamber. The device may be mounted on a machine tool () and selectively moved toward the object to root-roll a thread on the object when the object and device are rotated relative to one another.

Cold root-rolling device

An improved knurling device () includes a body () having an axis of elongation (x-x), and has a first part () and a second part (). The body first part has axially-spaced front and center plates (, respectively). The body second part is mounted on the center plate, and is selectively rotatable about the axis relative to the center plate. A plurality of knurl rolls () are mounted on the body first part between the front and center plates. An arbor () is axially mounted on the body second part, and is biased to move toward the front plate. The end of a rotating workpiece (W) is adapted to be axially inserted through the front plate and moved toward the body second part between the knurl rolls to roll a knurl pattern on the workpiece. The angular relationship between the knurl rolls is continuously maintained at all times.

End-knurling device

An automatic screw machine () has a body (), and a head () that is rotatably mounted on the body and that is adapted to be selectively rotated relative to the body between any of a plurality of index positions. The body and head have closely-spaced and facing bearing surfaces (and), have spindles () journalled on the head for rotation relative thereto, and have a source of pressurized lubricant. The improvement broadly includes: at least one body passageway () communicating the source with the body bearing surface, the intersection of each body passageway with the body bearing surface defining a body port (); a head passageway () communicating the head bearing surface with the spindle, the intersection of said head passageway with said head bearing surface defining at least one head port (); and the body and head passageways being so configured and arranged such that lubricant may flow from the source to the spindle only when the head is in the vicinity of the index position such that the body and head ports overlap one another.

Lubrication system for a multi-spindle automatic screw machine

An improved Davenport&#xae; multi-spindle automatic screw machine has a tool arm () mounted on a shaft () for rotational movement relative to a revolving head cap (). A needle bearing () is operatively arranged between the shaft and the revolving head cap. The bearing is radially loaded as said bearing is installed and that the individual needles of same remain elastically deformed by the radial load immediately after said bearing has been installed. The shaft has a hardened surface () that is engaged by the needles. The diameter of the shaft hardened surface portion is greater than the diameters of the adjacent shaft portions. Annular recesses () extend into the shaft at either end of the hardened portion. These recesses have frusto-conical surfaces () that act as ramps to guide insertion of the press-fittable needle bearing into the space between the shaft and the head cap.

Multi-spindle screw machine, and improved tool arm for use therein

The present invention provides an improvement for use in a machine tool having a spindle () mounted in a body opening () for axial and rotative movement relative to a body (). The improvement includes a bearing assembly () that permits spindles (S, S, S, . . . ) to be quickly exchanged while obviating the need to recenter a replacement spindle with respect to the opening after the original spindle has been initially center therein. The improved bearing assembly () broadly includes: a ferrous tubular sleeve () mounted in the body opening, the sleeve having an outer surface () arranged to face toward a portion () of the body that surrounds the opening and having an inner surface () arranged to face toward a penetrant portion of the spindle; and a tubular bearing () arranged within the sleeve, the tubular bearing having an outer surface () arranged to face the sleeve inner surface and having an inner surface () arranged to face the spindle penetrant portion.

High-precision spindle assembly for a davenport automatic screw machine

A thread rolling attachment () is adapted to be mounted on a machine tool and to be selectively moved in an axially direction relative to a workpiece (W) having a cylindrical surface upon which a thread is to be rolled. The improvement broadly includes a center plate () having three circularly-spaced detents (); a front plate () having a central portion () arranged in axially-spaced relation to the center plate and having three circularly-spaced lugs () extending toward the center plate such that their distal end faces are adapted to engage and bear against a center plate surface (); a recess () extending into each lug from such distal surface, each recess adapted to receive a respective one of the detents for angularly orienting the center and front plates relative to one another; three eccentric roll pins () having their opposite marginal end portions journalled on the center and front plates, and spaced equally from one another about an imaginary circle; a thread roll () rotatably mounted on each eccentric roll pin; and a plurality of fasteners () operatively arranged to selectively hold the center and front plates together; whereby, when the thread rolling attachment is assembled, the front plate will have improved rigidity and will be less susceptible to deformation.

Thread rolling attachment

A tangential rolling attachment ( ) for a machine tool, broadly includes a body ( ); a pair of arms ( L, R) having their proximal marginal end portions ( L, R) pivotally mounted on the body and having distal marginal end portions ( L, R). The arms are biased to move in opposite angular directions such that the distal marginal end portions thereof will be urged to move away from one another. A roll ( L, R) is mounted on the distal marginal end portion of each arm for imparting an action to a workpiece when the attachment is moved to tangentially engage the workpiece. A wedge ( ) is mounted on the body for movement relative thereto in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the workpiece. An actuator ( ) mounted on the body for selectively moving the wedge relative to the body to vary the spacing between the axes of the rolls. The improved rolling head may also incorporate a quick-release mechanism ( L, R) for mounting a roll on the arm of the machine tool attachment.

Tangential rolling attachment for a machine tool

An improved end-working attachment ( ) for a screw machine or a rotary transfer machine is particularly suited for use in rolling threads on a workpiece. The attachment broadly comprises: a slide base ( ) having an axis (y-y); at least two members ( ) mounted on the slide base for sliding movement in a radial direction toward and away from the slide base axis; a tool, such as a thread die ( ), on each member; an infeed mechanism ( ) for selectively causing the slide members to move toward the slide base axis such that said tools will engage said workpiece; and a return mechanism ( ) for urging the members to move away from the slide base axis.

Thread-rolling end-working attachment

A rigid tool slide support is disposed to be mounted in a screw machine in either of two different operating positions in each of which a tool slide reciprocates on the upper surface of the support to convey a cutting tool to and from the work that is to be machined. Projecting centrally from the bottom surface of the slide is an elongate, dovetail shaped guide which is slidably mounted in a similarly shaped but slightly wider recess in the support. Secured in the recess of the support adjacent one side thereof, and slidably engaged with a confronting side of the dovetail guide of the slide, is an elongate expansion gib having therein an adjusting screw that is rotatably adjustable to expand or contract the length of the gib, thereby to adjust the running clearance between the support and the slide. Mounted on the slide are two coupling pins, one of which is connected to a pivotal slide operating arm when the support is mounted in one of its two different operating positions, and the other of which pins is adjustable into and out of an operating position in which it projects from one side of the slide and into a reciprocable slide operating arm when the support is mounted in the other of its two operating positions,
