A method for automatically selecting a frequency band for transmission of a telemetry signal includes transforming acquired measurements from a time domain to a frequency domain to obtain a spectrum of measurements. The spectrum of measurements is processed to compute a total energy in band and a standard deviation of the power spectral density in band for a plurality of frequency bands. A ratio of the total energy in band to the standard deviation acquiring a plurality of measurements of transmitted telemetry signals and of the power spectral density in band is computed for at least two of the plurality of frequency bands. The frequency band having the highest computed ratio is selected and automatically downlinked to a downhole transmitter.

Aspects of the disclosure can relate to a method for transmitting a pump-off pressure profile within a limited bandwidth. For example, a method may include selecting a compression protocol based upon at least one of a time length associated with the pump-off pressure data, a relative mean-squared error associated with the pump-off pressure data, or a maximum error associated with the pump-off pressure data. The method also includes compressing pump-off pressure data with the compression protocol to produce compression bits. The compression bits represent the pump-off pressure profile. The method also includes transmitting, via a communication module, the compression bits to a computing device.

A technique facilitates diagnosis of a telemetry system, such as a mud pulse telemetry system or an electro-magnetic telemetry system. The technique comprises operating a telemetry system in a wellbore and collecting a variety of data. The data may relate to a rig state, a downhole state, a signal state, a surface state, and/or other suitable types of data. The data is processed to determine whether states of operation indicated by the data match states indicating a problem with operation of the telemetry system. If a problem is detected, appropriate information regarding the problem is transmitted for use in correcting the problem.

A method for automatically selecting a frequency band for transmission of a mud pulse telemetry signal includes transforming acquired transducer measurements from a time domain to a frequency domain to obtain a spectrum of measurements. The spectrum of measurements is processed to compute a total energy in band and a standard deviation of the power spectral density in band for a plurality of frequency bands. A ratio of the total energy in band to the standard deviation acquiring a plurality of transducer measurements of transmitted mud pulse telemetry pressure pulses and of the power spectral density in band is computed for at least two of the plurality of frequency bands. The frequency band having the highest computed ratio is selected and automatically downlinked to a downhole mud pulse telemetry transmitter.

Methods and systems of increasing signal strength of oilfield tools

Systems and methods cancel or compensate for an echo or noise in borehole communication. The systems and methods provide a downhole tool configured to provide borehole communication via mud pulse telemetry. The downhole tool pulses drilling fluid to generate a first pressure pulse and a second pressure pulse. The first pressure pulse moves upwardly with respect to the downhole component and is encoded with data associated a downhole measurement. A sensor is electrically connected to and in communication with the downhole tool. The first sensor is adapted to detect a characteristic of the second pressure pulse in the drilling mud. A ideal pressure pulse or a correction pressure pulse is generated by a downhole tool or a mud pulse modulator to reduce or cancel noise of the second pressure pulse.

Systems and methods for canceling noise and/or echoes in borehole communication

A technique for communicating data within a wellbore is provided. In one embodiment, a method includes receiving digital data and encoding the digital data into symbols each representative of one or more data bits of the digital data. In this embodiment, the method also includes modulating the phase of an acoustic wave within the wellbore to represent the plurality of symbols, wherein modulating the phase of an acoustic wave includes changing the phase of the acoustic wave such that the acoustic wave includes smooth phase transitions between successive phases representative of the plurality of symbols. Various additional methods, systems, and devices are also provided.

Mud pulse telemetry data modulation technique

A method and system for telemetry through a drilling fluid during drilling is disclosed. A reflector () is positioned downstream from the drilling mud pumps () and causes reflected pressure waves having the same pressure polarity as incident pressure waves traveling upwards. At least one pressure sensor () is positioned below the reflector () to sense pressure in the drilling fluid. The reflector can be a fixed orifice plate or an adjustable aperture.

Method and apparatus enhanced acoustic mud pulse telemetry

A method is disclosed for reducing noise in a measured telemetry signal. The method includes tracking a characteristic of at least one harmonic of a noise component in the measured telemetry signal band. The at least one harmonic has a frequency outside a telemetry signal band. The characteristic of the noise component is determined for at least one other harmonic thereof. The at least one other harmonic has a frequency inside the telemetry signal band. A noise reference is generated from the characteristic of the in band harmonic, and the noise reference is combined with the measured telemetry signal to generate a noise-canceled telemetry signal.
