In a computer network, network management applications in a network management station manage and control managed elements connected to the network through the use of network management requests. The network management requests are prioritized by the management station or the managed element. The managed element prioritizes received requests by pre-assigning priority values corresponding to user identification values included in the request or by pre-assigning priority values corresponding to source identification values included in the request. The management station prioritizes the network management requests by adding a priority value to each network management requests before sending the request to the managed element. The managed element extracts the priority value directly from the request or dependent on the user identification or source identification included in the request.

A system for setting expressions at an agent including a processor configured to receive a SNMP message from a management station specifying objects for notifications supported by the agent and expressions based on the objects, set expressions for the notification, evaluate expressions when the notification containing the expression is generated, and send the notification to the management station.

A method for configuring contents of a network management notification includes receiving at a management station a list of notifications supported by an agent and sending a message to the agent specifying objects for each of the notifications. A notification containing the specified objects is received at the management station upon the occurrence of an event.

A method for generating notification based expressions includes identifying notifications supported by an agent and specifying objects for at least one of the notifications. One or more expressions are defined based on objects specified for the notification. Method and system for setting expressions in network management notifications at an agent

Network communication between a management station and an expression management information base (MIB) on a simple network management protocol (SNMP) agent entails complex analysis and configuration during creation of the variables. In order to alleviate this concern, an interface is provided which accepts an expression from a user, parses the expression to determine if it is in proper form, creates SNMP set packets to set the expression on the expression MIB and sends the SNMP set packets to the expression MIB of the SNMP agent. Alternatively, a similar interface may be located within the SNMP agent or node, and requires no communication over the network in order to evaluate expressions.
