A needle guard assembly is provided for mounting to the hub of a needle assembly. The needle guard assembly includes a guide that is engageable on the hub. An elongate U-shaped cover is hingedly mounted to the guide and can be rotated from a first position where the needle cannula is substantially surrounded by the U-shaped walls of the cover into a second position where the needle cannula is exposed for use. The needle guard assembly further includes a slide that is slidably engaged in the guide and movable from a first position where the slide cooperatively engages the cover for completely surrounding the needle cannula to a second position where the slide is spaced proximally from the cover, thereby permitting the cover to rotate into its second position.

Pivotable guard for shielding a needle

A shielded needle assembly including an elongate needle with a proximal end, a distal end and a passageway therethrough. The assembly has a needle hub with a proximal end, a distal end and an outside surface. The proximal end of the needle is fitted and held in an axial opening through the needle hub at the distal end of the needle hub, with the distal end of the needle projecting distally axially. The proximal end of the needle hub is configured for releasable mounting the needle hub on a fluid handling device. The assembly of the invention has a shield with an open proximal end, a distal end, a sidewall having an elongate opening extending from the proximal end to the open end. The shield is operative between an open position, where the needle is exposed for use by passage through the elongate opening, a closed position, where the shield substantially obstructs access to the needle, and a latched position, where the shield is substantially prevented from inadvertent movement to the open position. The shield is attached to the needle hub by a mount with a hinge. The shield is movable between the open position and the closed position by an off axis pivotal movement about the hinge, and between the closed position and the latched position by an axial movement of the shield with respect to the mount.

Shielded needle assembly

A safety needle assembly for an intravenous fitting which protects against inadvertent touch contact with a piercing element after use. The assembly includes a piercing element such as a sharpened needle cannula or a blunt ended cannula that is mounted within a carrier member. A protective shield component is provided which is axially slidable relative to the carrier member and configured to attach to an intravenous fitting. The protective shield and carrier member may feature a guide assembly for guiding the shield between a pre-use, injection position and a post-use, locked position wherein inadvertent touch contact with the distal end of the piercing element is avoided. A releasable locking assembly may also be incorporated to releasably retain the protective shield in its pre-use position so as to facilitate attachment of the safety needle assembly with the intravenous fitting.

Safety needle assembly having telescoping shield

A protective barrier assembly for shielding a piercing element such as a pointed needle cannula or blunt ended cannula during or after use of a medical implement. The piercing element includes a longitudinal axis, a length, a distal end which may be pointed or blunt, a proximal end and a passageway therethrough. The assembly may include a hub configured for mounting to a medical implement such as a syringe or evacuated tube holder and having an axial opening through it for receiving the needle so that the distal end of the needle projects outwardly. The assembly also includes a shield with an open end, a closed end, and a sidewall portion with a longitudinal slot extending from the open end toward the closed end. The shield has a first position exposing the needle and a second position wherein the shield obstructs unintentional access to the needle. The shield may be mounted to the hub by a hinge opposite the slot, so that when the slot is moved from the first position to the second position, the slot provides clearance for the needle. A retaining and/or locking mechanism may be incorporated as part of the shield or made integral with the hinge so as to retain/lock the shield in the second position.

Manually pivoted barrier assembly for piercing element

A shielded needle assembly has an elongate needle with a proximal end, a distal end and a passageway therethrough. The assembly has a needle hub that has a proximal end, a distal end and an outside surface with an axial opening therethrough to receive and hold the needle with the distal end of the needle projecting distally axially. The assembly also has an elongate shield with a proximal end, a distal end and a sidewall with an elongate opening from its distal end to its proximal end. At least a section of the shield is substantially cylindrical and has an exterior surface. The shield is operable between an open position, where the needle is exposed for use by passage through the elongate opening, a closed position, where the shield substantially obstructs access to the needle, and a latched position, where the elongate opening is substantially obstructed and the shield is prevented from inadvertent movement to the open position. The assembly has a latch with an outwardly extending tab and a visual indication when the elongate opening is substantially obstructed. The assembly has a hinge including a mount for retaining the shield onto the needle hub. The shield is movable between the open position and the closed position over the needle by an off-axis pivotal movement about the hinge. The shield is latched and unlatched when in the closed position by a rotational movement of the latch with respect to the shield.

Needle assembly having single handedly activated shield

A needle shield assembly of the present invention includes a needle cannula having a proximal end, a distal end and a lumen therethrough. A hub having a proximal end for connecting to a medical instrument and a distal end connected to the proximal end of the needle cannula is provided. A base member is connected to the hub. An elongate needle shield includes a proximal end hingedly connected to the base member, a distal end and a longitudinal axis therebetween. The needle shield includes a longitudinal opening therein. The needle shield is capable of rotating from a first position exposing at least the distal end the needle cannula and a second position wherein the needle cannula is within the longitudinal opening of the needle shield. A sleeve having a longitudinal slot is rotatably connected to the needle shield. The sleeve is capable of rotating about the needle shield to an open position where the longitudinal slot in the sleeve and the longitudinal opening in the needle shield are sufficiently aligned to allow passage of the needle cannula so that the needle shield can be rotated from the first position to the second position. The sleeve is rotatable about the needle shield, to a position which blocks the longitudinal opening of the needle shield. Color safety indicator means for visually indicating the sleeve is rotated to a position which blocks the longitudinal opening of the needle shield is provided.

Needle shield assembly having safety indication features

A safety needle assembly for providing secure connection of a needle cannula to a straight-site or Y-site of an intravenous fitting. The assembly includes a base portion and a protective shield disposed about the needle cannula to at least partially envelop the needle cannula within the shield. A latch is pivoted to the shield so as to releasably lock the intravenous fitting within the shield. The latch includes a pivot arm having at least one shield engaging finger member disposed to biasingly engage at least a portion of the shield, and at least one member disposed through a passageway formed in the shield to trap the intravenous fitting within the shield.
