Device for preventing a fuel tank to be overfilled

A fuel-filler inlet for motor vehicles comprises a closure neck, an insert associated with the closure neck, a filling chamber downstream of the insert, and a filling tube downstream of the filling chamber which leads to a fuel tank. In order to achieve good guidance of the fuel nozzle, reliable response of the expansion port and ventilation during the fuel-dispensing operation, a collar is provided between the filling chamber and filling tube, the internal diameter of which is somewhat larger than that of the opening tube of a fuel nozzle. The collar provides through-passage openings which, with the fuel nozzle inserted, produce a flow connection between the filling tube and filling chamber.

To provide a simple on-board refueling vapor recovery (ORVR) system without separate check valves and the like, a multi-path valve, typically a 6/2 valve (5) is provided, and formed with a discrete switching path (13) which is inserted in a pressure equalization line (12). Upon valve operation between a fuel filling mode position and an operating mode position, respectively, the valve switches the discrete switching path of the pressure equalization line (12) to connect the equalization line (12) to a fuel vapor receptor through a valve outlet when the valve (5) is in operating mode position, while blocking the equalization line (12) when the valve (6) is in filling mode position. A roll-over valve (14) can be integrated into the system, preferably coupled to a small-diameter pressure equalization duct (15) with a fill vent line (3) which, by operation of the valve, is open when a nozzle (9) is introduced into a filling stub (2) for the fuel tank, but closed when the nozzle is removed, leaving only an operating vent line (4), the pressure equalization line (12) and the small-diameter pressure equalization duct (15) in communication with the outlet from the valve leading to vapor receptor.

To securely retain a valve flap (10) against an opening (8) in a fill end stub for liquid fuel, typically unleaded gasoline, a pivotable engagement finger (15, 35) is engageable with the flap and held against the opening by an operating system (18, 28, 38) operable by the vehicle operator, for selective engagement of the finger (15, 35) against the underside of the flap (10) to selectively press the flap against the opening and close the opening, or to permit pivoting of the flap away from the opening if an appropriate gasoline fill-in nozzle is pressed against the flap.

To form an easily manufactured and installed end piece and nozzle receptor (1) for a fill pipe of a fuel tank of a motor vehicle, adapted to receive a fuel dispensing nozzle (14) of a specific type, for example for lead-free gasoline, the nozzle receptor is a single, unitary element (1) of electrically conductive sheet metal, preferably aluminum or stainless steel. It is formed with an inner thread (5) to receive a fuel cap and, just beyond, formed with an extended sealing flange (6), adapted to fit, sealingly, against an end portion (8) of the fill pipe (4). The seal can be obtained, for example, by welding the fill pipe and the nozzle receptor, preferably along a welding bead (7). A circumferential apron (9) extends from the flange (6), the apron having a height varying along its circumference so that it can fit against the body or chassis (11) of the motor vehicle, and be attached thereto along a laterally projecting attachment flange (10). The nozzle receptor has a tubular portion (2) which, at its inner end, is formed with a constricted opening (13) to permit reception only of the special-type fuel dispensing nozzle (14). A lateral opening (19) is cut in the wall of the tubular portion and the tube wall material bent outwardly in form of a tab (18) to provide an attachment element for a resiliently biassed, selectively movable valve flap (15).
