A head gimbal assembly includes a gimbal, a slider, and a polymer layer. The gimbal comprises a metal layer, and the metal layer of the gimbal defines a gimbal mounting portion for attachment to a metallic load beam and a gimbal tongue extending from the gimbal mounting portion. The slider comprises a ceramic material for carrying a transducing head, and at least a portion of the slider is secured to the gimbal tongue. The polymer layer is positioned adjacent to the gimbal and configured for limiting ceramic-to-metal and metal-to-metal contact.

A head gimbal assembly for use with a load beam includes a gimbal, a slider for carrying a transducing head, and first and second tabs. The gimbal is configured to be supported by the load beam, and includes a gimbal tongue. At least a portion of the slider is secured to the gimbal tongue. The first tab extends from the gimbal tongue proximate a first corner of the slider. The second tab is spaced from the first tab and extends from the gimbal tongue proximate a second corner of the slider.

A suspension is disclosed that includes a pre-load section and a load section. The pre-load section is configured to be connected to a base. The load section is connected to the pre-load section and comprises a load beam portion, a flex circuit portion, and a brace. The brace extends laterally exterior to the load beam portion proximate to the pre-load section. The brace increases the lateral sway vibration mode of the load section, allowing the load beam portion to be narrower, and provide a decreased weight and increased torsion vibration mode, while also maintaining an increased lateral sway vibration mode.

Braced suspension for supporting a head slider

An apparatus, method and combination for dissipating vibration from a head suspension of a data storage device. The combination includes a rotating disc in a data exchange relationship with a read/write head supported by a head suspension formed by the method. The method includes the steps of; forming a mounting region and a load beam region each adjacent a bend region; removing material from the bend region to form an aperture, a strut, an isolation aperture and a damping material support structure; and affixing a damping material to the strut and the damping material support structure. The apparatus includes the bend region adjacent both the mounting region and the load beam region, with the damping material attached to the strut as well as to the damping material support structure. The load beam region includes a rigid portion, which supports a flexure upon which a read/write head is attached.

Head suspension with vibration damping for a data storage device

A suspension is provided, which has a base, a load beam and a hinge structure. The hinge structure and at least one of the base and the load beam are formed of a single continuous piece of multiple layer laminate material, which includes first and second layers. The hinge structure includes a first beam formed by the first layer and a second beam formed by the second layer. The first layer is absent along the second beam and the second layer is absent along the first beam such that the first and second beams are vertically offset from one another. The first and second beams extend between the base and the load beam.

Disc flutter compensating suspension

One embodiment of the present invention provides a unified suspension that includes an integral, continuous laminate, which has a thick actuator arm portion, a thin pre-load portion, and a beam portion, all formed of the same single laminate. The pre-load portion is integrally connected to the actuator arm portion, is thinner than the actuator arm portion, and is configured to apply a pre-load force. The beam portion is integrally connected to the pre-load portion, and is configured for attaching a gimbal to it. This integral, continuous laminate substantially lowers the mass of the suspension, provides excellent shock, resonance and lift tab performance, lowers power consumption requirements, and simplifies the complexity and cost of manufacturing components for a suspension and for assembling the components of the suspension together and into a larger system of which the suspension is a part.

Unified suspension laminate

A suspension for supporting a head slider over a media surface. The suspension includes a load beam, a base plate interface region, and a base plate. The load beam has a proximal end, a distal end and longitudinal centerline. A localized stiffening portion is raised above the load beam, and is connected to the load beam by rounded side edges. The base plate interface region is coupled to a proximal end of the load beam, and provides a pre-load bend. Finally, base plate is coupled to the base plate interface region such that the base plate is coupled to a side of the base plate interface region that is opposite the media surface.

An actuation assembly includes a movable actuator arm, a suspension assembly, a slider, and means for attaching the slider to the gimbal. The actuator arm supports the suspension assembly, which includes a gimbal carrying a gimbal bond pad that is electrically isolated from the gimbal. The slider includes an air bearing surface and a gimbal opposing face opposite the air bearing surface. The means for attaching the slider to the gimbal provide a direct contact between the gimbal and the slider and elevate a plane of the gimbal opposing face with respect to the gimbal bond pad. The means for attaching the slider to the gimbal is integral with the gimbal.

A head gimbal assembly has a gimbal with a limiter formed from a sheet prior to attachment to the load beam structure. The limiter has a pair of flange extensions, each flange extension having an arm extension. The flange extensions and the arm extension are bent around a tip of the load beam to interleave the limiter around the load beam. The arm extensions have a narrower width than a width of the flange extensions, providing room for adjustment to the pitch and roll attitude of the system after assembly.

A suspension for a storage device includes a metal layer and one or more composite stiffeners bonded to the metal layer to stiffen part but not all of the suspension. The composite stiffeners are made of a composite material and are bonded to the metal layer by an adhesive. Under most embodiments, the composite material has a higher stiffness to weight ratio than a metal.

A system and a method for increasing suspension resonance frequencies of a head suspension assembly of a disc drive includes, in one example embodiment, attaching a base plate to an actuator arm assembly of the disc drive such that the base plate including the actuator arm assembly are in actuating relationship with a rotating disc of the disc drive. A two-piece suspension member having a first and second pieces is attached to the base plate. A gimbal is attached to the two-piece suspension member such that a predetermined bendable area is formed between the first and second pieces and on the gimbal having a stiffer preload bend radius. A stiffer preload bend radius provides a higher stiffness-to-mass ratio without increasing the spring rate of the head suspension assembly to increase suspension resonance frequencies of the head suspension assembly to fall outside a bandwidth of a servo drive to reduce off-track motion of the head suspension assembly during track follow-and-seek operations of the disc drive.

Resonance four piece suspension

The present invention provides a system, method and apparatus for controlling the coverage of an adhesive bond area between a suspension and a flex circuit interconnect by etching an area of the suspension to create a bonding area. The etching process prevents bonding of the flex circuit interconnect to the suspension in a tail and a side region allowing movement between the flex circuit and suspension, wherein the movement dampens a first torsion resonance mode. Better control of the bonding area between the interconnect and the suspension using the &ldquo;adhesive down&rdquo; helps reduce the variation in the roll stiffness of the suspension thereby reducing the fly height variation.

Adhesive control features for disc drive head suspension and flex circuit interconnect

A disc drive suspension is provided, which includes a longitudinal axis, a rigid load beam section and a preload transfer section. The rigid load beam section extends along the longitudinal axis and has first and second opposing lateral side edges with respective first and second stiffening rails. The first and second stiffening rails are bent out-of-plane with respect to a main body portion of the rigid load beam section and terminate at a distal end of the rigid load beam section. The preload transfer section extends distally from the distal end of the rigid load beam section and has a third stiffening rail. The third stiffening rail is bent out-of-plane with respect to a main body portion of the preload transfer section and extends longitudinally from the distal end of the rigid load beam section.

Disc drive suspension having tip stiffener

The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for providing improved roll static angle adjustment for head gimbal assemblies (HGA's) used in disc drives. In the method, proximal and distal clamping members are attached to a load beam of the HGA and are separated by a distance of 4-30% of the length of the load beam. One of the distal and proximal clamping members is rotated about a longitudinal axis of the load beam such that the relative angular position of the distal and proximal clamping members reaches an adjust angle. Also disclosed is a rigid beam section of an HGA that includes apertures which are positioned along maximum stress contours where early plastic deformation of the rigid beam section is desired during adjustment of the roll static angle.
