A method, system, and computer program product for establishing security parameters that are used to exchange data on a secure connection. A piggy-backed key exchange protocol is defined, with which these security parameters are advantageously exchanged. By piggy-backing the key exchange onto other already-required messages (such as a client's HTTP GET request, or the server's response thereto), the overhead associated with setting up a secure browser-to-server connection is minimized. This technique is defined for a number of different scenarios, where the client and server may or may not share an encoding scheme, and is designed to maintain the integrity of application layer communication protocols. In one scenario, a client requests a server to propose a message encoding scheme. If the client has security-sensitive data to transmit with its request, it waits for the proposed scheme before sending this sensitive data to the server. Otherwise, the server may inform the client of the message encoding scheme in the same transmission used to send a response to a client's request.

Techniques for enhancing security in networking environments, whereby a cryptographic node negotiates a set of security parameters (a 'security association') with an end node, on behalf of a routing node (an 'edge router'), and then securely distributes the negotiated security parameters to the edge router and/or to other edge routers in the network. A method and system for increasing ease-of-use and bandwidth utilization in a wireless device capable of accessing a communication network is disclosed. The present invention uses the wireless device to send information about the environment to a server on the communication network. In response, the wireless device receives identifiers from the server of the web sites most likely to be requested by a user of the wireless device in that environment. In a further aspect of the present invention, the wireless device may also pre-fetch contents from the identified web sites in times when bandwidth is not in use to further speed responsiveness of the device.

Methods, systems and computer program products are provided which provide profile information associated with a client to a server by generating, at the client, a profile document containing profile information associated with the client and incorporating in the profile document a designator which indicates that profile information identified by the designator is not provided by the client and is provided by a network intermediary in a path between the client and the server. The designator in the profile document is encrypted utilizing a key associated with the client and the profile document with the encrypted designator transmitted from the client to the server utilizing the path. A method and system for increasing ease-of-use and bandwidth utilization in a wireless device capable of accessing a communication network is disclosed. The present invention receives information about the wireless device's environment, and then uses the environment to determine web sites most likely to be requested. Identifiers of the web sites most likely to be requested are then pushed to the wireless device for selection by the user. In a further aspect of the present invention, the wireless device may also pre-fetch contents from the identified web sites in times when bandwidth is not in use to further speed responsiveness of the device.

A method and apparatus for automated transcoder selection in a data processing system for transcoding content using a set of transcoders. A request is received for the content from a client, wherein the request includes a set of characteristics.
