A wireless access node to improve data transmission throughput comprises a wireless communication transceiver and a processing system. The wireless access node transmits a first data packet comprising a preamble for delivery to a wireless communication device during a first timeslot, monitors for a response transmitted from the wireless communication device during a predetermined number of timeslots, and if the response transmitted from the wireless communication device is not received during the predetermined number of timeslots, modify the preamble to generate a modified preamble, retransmit the first data packet with the modified preamble for delivery to the wireless communication device during a second timeslot, and if an acknowledgement of receipt of the first data packet with the modified preamble is received from the wireless communication device during the predetermined number of timeslots, transmit a second data packet for delivery to the wireless communication device during a third timeslot.

Data transmission throughput for a wireless access node

A wireless access node and media session extension method configured to extend a media session in a wireless network are provided. The wireless access node in one example embodiment includes a communication interface configured to exchange wireless communications with a user equipment (UE), a storage system configured to store a UE fail state corresponding to the UE of a current media session and store an extended dormancy time period, and a processing system coupled to the communication interface and to the storage system, with the processing system configured to obtain the UE fail state, if the UE fail state is true, then load the extended dormancy time period into a dormancy timer corresponding to the UE, and if the dormancy timer expires, then maintain one or both of a traffic channel and a signaling channel between the wireless access node and the UE.

Media session extension in a wireless network

Range indicators for sectors in a wireless network may be determined by measuring, in a plurality of test locations, signal strengths of pilot signals transmitted by the sectors. Each sector's determined range indicator may be stored as a predefined range indicator for the sector in association with a list of predefined neighbors for the sector. When a candidate sector is added to a mobile station's active set, a neighbor list may be constructed for the mobile station, by taking into account the predefined range indicator for the candidate sector. If the predefined range indicator indicates that the candidate sector has a standard range, then the candidate sector's predefined neighbors may be added to the neighbor list. If the predefined range indicator indicates that the candidate sector has a non-standard range (e.g., indicating a 'boomer'), then the candidate sector's predefined neighbors may be omitted from the neighbor list.

Methods and systems for managing boomer sectors

A method, system, and apparatus for managing spreading codes used in communication over a radio frequency air interface. When a radio access network (RAN) is to assign a spreading code to a mobile station in the coverage area, the RAN may determine which mobile station currently having an assigned traffic channel in the coverage area has a highest forward-link signal quality, and the RAN may select a spreading code based on the spreading code of that determined mobile station's assigned traffic channel. For instance, the RAN may select a spreading code that is quasi-orthogonal to the spreading code of the determined mobile station's assigned traffic channel.

Assignment of air-interface spreading codes in a cellular wireless communication system

A method and corresponding system to help manage allocation of subframes for relay communication. The allocation may alternate or rotate between which subframes per cycle are used for backhaul communication and which subframes per cycle are used for access communication. By changing the allocation of one or more subframes per cycle between backhaul and access, it becomes possible to only tentatively take away certain subframes of access communication, while reverting to use those subframes for access communication perhaps as soon as the next cycle.

Managing allocation of subframes for relay communication

The present invention provides a method and system for determining whether to accept an access request from an AT. In an embodiment of the invention, a base station receives an access request from an AT that is located within a sector served by the base station. In response to receiving the access request, the base station obtains the physical location of the AT within the sector. The base station then determines whether to accept the access request based on the physical location of the AT within the sector.

Systems and methods for using topology to determine whether to grant an access request from an access terminal

Systems and methods for dynamically adjusting the size of an access search window are provided. In an embodiment a base station uses an access search window size, which is initially set to a default value, to determine whether to accept access requests from access terminals (ATs). The base station operates to accept access requests from ATs when the ATs are within the distance defined by the value of the access search window. The base station further operates to measure an amount of traffic for a sector of a wireless coverage area and change the value of the access search window size based on the amount of traffic on the sector.
