A sound barrier and method of sound insulation are disclosed. In one aspect of the disclosure, a sound barrier comprises a first, solid medium, such as a viscoelastic solid and a second medium, such as air. At least one of the two media forms a periodic array disposed in the other medium. The solid medium has a speed of propagation of longitudinal sound wave and a speed of propagation of transverse sound wave, the speed of propagation of longitudinal sound wave being at least about 30 times the speed of propagation of transverse sound wave.

Viscoelastic phononic crystal

A pressure sensitive adhesive composition is described comprising a polyisobutylene polymer having a first functional group and an acrylic polymer having a second functional group present in the acrylic polymer backbone. The first and second functional groups form a hydrogen bond. In some embodiments, the adhesive composition further comprises a crosslinker that covalently crosslinks the second functional group(s) present in the polymer backbone of the acrylic polymer. Also described are adhesive articles, such as a tape, methods of adhesively bonding, and methods of making a pressure sensitive adhesive.

Sound barrier for audible acoustic frequency management

A pressure sensitive adhesive composition is described comprising unfunctionalized (e.g. polyisobutylene) synthetic rubber and an acrylic polymer having functionalized polyisobutylene polymer bonded to the acrylic polymer. In some embodiments, the functionalized polyisobutylene polymer has a first functional group hydrogen bonded with a second functional group present in the acrylic polymer backbone. In other embodiments, the functionalized polyisobutylene polymer is covalently bonded to the acrylic polymer backbone. Also described are adhesive articles, such as a tape, methods of adhesively bonding, and methods of making a pressure sensitive adhesive.

A sound insulation process comprises (a) providing at least one sound insulation device comprising at least one sound barrier comprising at least one substantially periodic array of structures disposed in a first medium having a first density, the structures being made of a second medium having a second density different from the first density, wherein one of the first and second media is a viscoelastic medium having a speed of propagation of longitudinal sound wave and a speed of propagation of transverse sound wave, the speed of propagation of longitudinal sound wave being at least about 30 times the speed of propagation of transverse sound wave, and wherein the other of the first and second media is a viscoelastic or elastic medium; and (b) interposing the sound insulation device between an acoustic source area and an acoustic receiving area of a transportation vehicle.

A method of making a multilayered chromonic structure comprises (a) preparing a first aqueous mixture comprising (i) a first continuous water-soluble polymer phase and (ii) a first discontinuous chromonic phase comprising a chromonic material, to form chromonic nanoparticles; (b) non-covalently crosslinking the resulting chromonic nanoparticles with a multivalent cation salt; (c) dispersing the resulting crosslinked chromonic nanoparticles in a composition comprising a chromonic material to form a chromonic nanoparticle dispersion; and (d) preparing a second aqueous mixture comprising (i) a second discontinuous chromonic phase comprising the chromonic nanoparticle dispersion and (ii) a second continuous water-soluble polymer phase, to encapsulate the chromonic nanoparticles; wherein at least one of the first discontinuous chromonic phase and the second discontinuous chromonic phase further comprises a guest compound.

Multilayered chromonic structures

A method of making encapsulated chromonic nanoparticles includes exposing crosslinked chromonic nanoparticles to an acid selected from the group consisting of carbonic acid, phosphoric acid, lactic acid, citric acid, boric acid, sulfuric acid, and mixtures thereof in the presence of water to encapsulate the crosslinked nanoparticles in a shell comprising a complex comprising the chromonic material, the multivalent cations, and the acid anions.
