Disclosed are a process for producing an over-based sulfurized alkaline earth metal phenate which comprises reacting either a mixture of reaction materials comprising a phenol, a dihydric alcohol, an alkaline earth metal reagent which is an alkaline earth metal oxide or hydroxide or a mixture of both, and sulfur or a mixture of these reaction materials with water, distilling off an excess amount of the dihydric alcohol and at least excess amount of water, and subsequently treating the resulting distillation residue with carbon dioxide, wherein the carbon dioxide treatment is carried out (A) in the presence of 0.001 to 0.7 mol of a fatty acid or a fatty amine per 1 mol of the alkaline earth metal reagent and (B) in the presence of either (i) 0.01 to 0.9 mol of water per 1 mol of the alkaline earth metal reagent or (ii) 0.05 to 5.0 mol of a lower alcohol containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms per 1 mol of the alkaline earth metal reagent or (iii) both of (i) and (ii); and an over-based sulfurized alkaline earth metal phenate having a base number of 250 to 400 mgKOH/g, a viscosity of 40 to 1,000 cSt at 100.degree. C. and a color of L3.0 to 8.0Dil (by ASTM), and contains 0.1 to 50 wt % of the fatty acid or the fatty amine based on the total amount thereof, which is produced by the above-mentioned process.

A process for the production of an over based alkaline earth metal phenate (sulfurized, unsulfurized or a mixture thereof), in which the process comprises the steps of: effecting reactions among phenols, dihydric alcohols and an alkaline earth metal reagent (alkaline earth metal oxide or hydroxide or a mixture thereof), or among these compounds further mixed with sulfur and/or water; removing an excess of the dihydric alcohols and at least an excess of water by distillation; and subsequently treating resulting distillation residue with carbon dioxide, wherein the improvement resides in that the carbon dioxide treatment is carried out in the presence of water in an amount of from 0.01 to 1.0 mol per 1 mol of the alkaline earth metal reagent. Preferably, the carbon dioxide treatment is carried out in the presence of 0.1 to 0.7 mol sulfur and 0.1 to 1.0 mol water per 1 mol of the alkaline earth metal reagent. The process of this invention is industrially advantageous because the alkaline earth metal phenate obtained by the process has a high basicity and an easily handleable low viscosity and is useful as a high quality detergent for a lubricating or fuel oil.

A process for producing an over-based sulfurized alkaline earth metal phenate type detergent, which comprises reacting a phenol and a dihydric alcohol with an alkaline earth metal reagent to carry out a metal addition reaction, and reacting sulfur therewith to carry out a sulfurization reaction, and then reacting carbon dioxide therewith to carry out a carbon dioxide treatment, characterized in that the metal addition reaction and the sulfurization reaction are carried out under pressure and closed conditions. The sulfurization reaction may be carried out simultaneously with the metal addition reaction, or, alternatively, with the carbon dioxide treatment after the metal addition reaction. Furthermore, the sulfurization reaction may be carried out between the metal addition reaction and the carbon dioxide treatment.

A process for the production of a basic alkaline earth metal phenate is disclosed. The process comprises reacting a phenol, a dihydric alcohol, and an alkaline earth metal agent selected from alkaline earth metal oxides and hydroxides to achieve the addition of the alkaline earth metal to the phenol, wherein water is added to the reaction system in an amount of from 0.01 to 10 mols per mol of the alkaline earth metal agent. This basic alkaline earth metal phenate is useful as an additive for lubricating oils and fuel oils.
