A method of communicating with a shared imaging apparatus connected to a computer network, wherein communication over the network is facilitated through use of network packets, includes the steps of providing the shared imaging apparatus with networking hardware; providing the shared imaging apparatus with imaging apparatus firmware; defining a data channel associated with the networking hardware; instructing the networking hardware to accept information on the data channel from a user that owns the data channel; processing automatic Internet Protocol (IP) address negotiation network packets with the imaging apparatus firmware when the data channel is not owned; and processing second types of network packets, different from the automatic IP address negotiation network packets, by the networking hardware of the shared imaging apparatus when the data channel is owned.

A method for operating a device (such as a printer) having a first interface (such as USB interface) connectable to a first computer and a second interface (such as an Ethernet interface) connectable to a second computer. A phase lock loop (PLL) circuit is obtained which is driven by a clock source, which is adapted for switching between operating at the first and second clock frequencies, and which is operatively connected to the first and second interfaces to provide a clock signal to the first and second interfaces. The PLL circuit is operated at the first clock frequency when the first interface is active and is operated at the second clock frequency when the second interface is active. A device includes the first and second interfaces, the PLL circuit, and the clock source.

A method for negotiating an Internet Protocol (IP) address for an imaging apparatus connected to a network includes the steps of controlling network communication between the imaging apparatus and the network; defining an imaging state when the imaging apparatus is available for imaging, wherein during the imaging state the imaging apparatus waits in an idle state during periods of non-imaging; defining an automatic IP address negotiation state when the imaging apparatus is not available for imaging; if the imaging apparatus is in the idle state, then determining whether the imaging apparatus should leave the imaging state and enter the automatic IP address negotiation state; and when the imaging apparatus is in the automatic IP address negotiation state, then attempting to automatically assign an IP address to the imaging apparatus.

An adapter device is provided for connection to a printer and an image input device, such as a document scanner or digital camera, that enables the printer to operate as a digital copier for image data received from the image input device. The adapter device includes an input/output controller, memory and a processor. The input/output controller controls the exchange of information with the printer and with the image input device. The memory buffers input device driver software for the image input device and printer driver software for the printer, and also stores image data output by the image input device. The processor is responsive to commands made from a control panel to initiate operation of the image input device under control of the input device driver software. The processor also processes image data from the image input device under control of the printer driver software and generates printer data to be printed by the printer.

An energy conversion device which benefits from forces associated with angular momentum. A mass such as fluid is directed through a conduit from one elevation to a lower elevation with the conduit configured to conform to a decreasing cross-sectional area and oriented in a spiral of substantially conical shape so that fluid entering into the conduit accelerates both by virtue of the decreasing cross-sectional area of the conduit and by the velocity added to the fluid by successively constricting the fluid to an ever tighter spiral path of lesser radius ultimately to an output of the conduit which is in communication with a converter such as a turbine. The converter has an interior passageway in axial alignment with an outlet of the conduit and includes an interior vane which coacts against the fluid exiting from the outlet of the conduit imparting rotation to the rotor which circumscribes the passageway. The rotor is supported on a bearing block and operatively couples to a stator for power output.
