Implementations described herein include devices and systems for attenuation of increased spinal flexion loads post-fusion that include a transition member. The transition member may have a tension component coupleable to a fused vertebra of a plurality of fused vertebra of a fusion implant and to an adjacent unfused vertebra. The tension component may be tensionable to a selected value. The tension component may modulate a flexion range of motion of the adjacent unfused vertebra as a function of the selected value of tension of the tension component. The transition member may attenuate spinal flexion loads on adjacent unfused vertebra post-operatively.

Various embodiments of an apparatus and a method prevent a dangerous user behavior with a mobile communication device by embedding RFID tags in a vehicle's interior space and by interrogating those embedded RFID tags with an integrated RFID tag reader in the mobile communication device. In one embodiment of the invention, the vehicle's interior space is divided into multiple 'zones,' at least one of which is defined as a 'driving lock' zone. A vehicle interior zone is identifiable with an embedded RFID tag with a particular tag readable range, which only extends to the boundary of that particular zone. Therefore, a mobile communication device with an integrated RFID tag reader can recognize which zone the mobile communication device is currently in by accessing an RFID tag embedded nearby, and then proceed to enable the driving lock on the mobile communication device, if necessary.

One or more embodiments of an apparatus and a method prevent a dangerous user behavior with a mobile communication device with an integrated pedometer. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the integrated pedometer comprises a pedometer sensor and an associated software executed on a CPU and a memory unit of the mobile communication device, wherein the pedometer sensor is configured to detect a user's movements and vibrations to determine whether the user is walking or jogging based on a real-time determination from a sensor threshold value and an operation of the associated software. If the integrated pedometer determines that the user is currently walking or jogging, the associated software can dynamically activate a 'walking lock' or a 'jogging lock,' which prevents, prohibits, and/or limits the usage of certain device functions as long as the user is determined to be walking or jogging by the integrated pedometer.

The network-based text-to-speech (TTS) alert system can also deliver the purchase reminder to a recipient's voicemail and leave a transaction identifier number and a centralized or a recipient-specific call-back phone number to the recipient's voicemail. A recipient can utilize the transaction identifier number, the centralized or the recipient-specific call-back phone number, and optionally a recipient-specific password to make a phone call to retrieve the purchase reminder previously delivered to the recipient's voicemail by the network-based text-to-speech (TTS) alert system. Then, the recipient can authorize and/or complete a transaction related to the purchase reminder over the same phone call.

An apparatus and a method are disclosed for automated projection image adjustments for a portable projection device. In one embodiment of the invention, the apparatus periodically polls a tilt sensor inside the portable projection device and uses the tilt sensor reading as a key to a lookup table which stores pre-computed visual distortion adjustment values. Furthermore, the apparatus can also poll a distance measurement sensor to measure a distance between a projector lens and a presumed projection surface periodically. The measured distance value can also be used as an additional parameter to the key for the lookup table to retrieve appropriate visual distortion adjustment values which are pre-computed and stored in the lookup table. The fast pre-computed adjustment value retrieval without real-time computation of graphical transformations to correct the visual distortions minimizes processor load, energy consumption, and processing delays for projection image corrections.

A shift-by-speech transmission system with intelligent shifting algorithm allows a driver or a motorcyclist to choose a desired gear by voice command. An intuitive and engaging shift-by-speech technology disclosed in the present invention, called 'VoiceShift', allows the driver or the motorcyclist to switch gears by voice commands. VoiceShift also allows the driver or the motorcyclist to skip-shift gears in non-sequential manner, thereby giving the driver a sense of freedom and excitement similar to a stick-shift manual transmission vehicle. A novel intelligent shifting algorithm of the shift-by-speech transmission system is capable of auto-correcting the driver's judgment error in skip-shifting by engaging a closest mechanically-safe gear to the driver's desired gear issued via voice command.

A shift-by-speech transmission system allows a driver or a motorcyclist to choose a desired gear by voice commands. Conventional sequential semi-manual shifting only allows the driver to shift one gear up or down from a current gear using a gearshift lever or a paddle shifter. The level of driver engagement in existing semi-manual shifters leaves much to be desired for many auto enthusiasts. An intuitive and engaging shift-by-speech technology disclosed in the present invention, called 'VoiceShift', allows the driver or the motorcyclist to switch gears by voice commands.
