Area lighting fixture

A sports lighting fixture having improved light delivery characteristics includes an elongated bare arc tube, high intensity discharge lamp disposed near the apex of a parabolically shaped reflector member. The reflector is constructed of a non-metallic material and by the orientation and positioning of the lamp within the reflector, an essentially oval shaped light pattern is generated. A light transmissive cover is disposed over the open end of the reflector. When projected onto the playing surface of a sports field, the oval shaped light pattern translates to an essentially circular shaped pattern which allows for a more uniform and efficient overlapping of the multiple light outputs at the playing field level. Louvers can be disposed within the reflector to further redirect any high angle light output into a lower angle which is more useful at the playing surface level.

Sports lighting luminaire having low glare characteristics

A sports lighting fixture having a broken glass detection arrangement includes a high intensity light source disposed near the closed end of a reflector member. A cover member made of a light transmissive material is disposed at the open end of the reflector and is effective for filtering UV radiation emitted by the light source. A ballast circuit has in input portion receptive of line power and an output portion effective for conditioning the line power to energize the light source. A conductor strip is disposed on the cover member and is effective such that, when the cover member is intact, an electrical signal can be passed therethrough. An interruption circuit arrangement is electrically coupled into the ballast circuit and has the conductive strip disposed therein so that, upon the occurrence of an open condition in the conductive strip, indicative of a broken glass condition, the interruption circuit arrangement is effective for interrupting current flow in the ballast circuit thereby resulting in a shutdown of power to the light source and the consequent prevention of further UV emission until such time as the cover member is replaced.

In this luminaire, there is a dome-shaped reflector having a top, a bottom, and a central axis on which a light source is adapted to be positioned. A metal wall of the reflector has an inner surface extending about the central axis and defining a bottom opening through which the inner surface reflects light received from the source. The angular distribution about the central axis of the light reflected from the inner surface through the bottom opening is controlled by many elongated facets on the inner surface extending in a top-to-bottom direction with respect to the reflector. The facets are arranged about the central axis in side-by-side relationship, with juxtaposed facets being at an angle with respect to each other so as to form alternating ridges and grooves between juxtaposed facets. The individual ridges, when viewed in transverse cross-section, each include two of the facets intersecting at an apex that is located on a reference line for each ridge extending radially outward from said central axis. The individual ridges that are located in predetermined sectors of the inner surface each have one of its two facets disposed at a much smaller angle with respect to its reference line than the other of the two facets so that this ridge is highly bilaterally asymmetrical with respect to said reference line.

This luminaire comprises a reflector for receiving a lamp, an opening in the reflector through which light from the lamp is reflected, and a closure removably secured over the opening. Within the luminaire is an energizing circuit for the lamp, and connected within this circuit is a pair of disconnect contacts that are separable to preclude energization of the lamp via the energizing circuit. Actuating means for the disconnect contacts is operable to effect separation of the contacts in response to removal of the closure from its normal position covering the opening. This actuating means includes a plunger of electrical insulating material disposed between the light-transmitting material of the closure and one of said disconnect contacts.

This luminaire comprises a generally dome-shaped main reflector having a bottom opening and a top opening and a lamp within the main reflector defining a light source located between the top and bottom openings. This main reflector, when mounted in a location above a warehouse aisle, is adapted to illuminate stacked material along both edges of the aisle with light passing through the bottom opening. Positioned above the top opening are auxiliary reflectors for receiving light from the source passing through the top opening and for reflecting such light to the edges of the aisle onto regions of the stacked material that are poorly illuminated by light passing through the bottom opening.

A polycarbonate orientable refractor for a luminaire comprises a mounting ring which has a collar portion fitting a neck portion of the refractor with matching diameters. A diametric interference is provided between a groove in one part and a mating ridge in the other part to an extent allowing a snap fit. Shallow interfering ribs and valleys in the mating surfaces controllably lock the parts together while allowing angular indexing for orienting the light distribution pattern of the refractor.

Luminaire has refractor with a hinged door to provide access to the enclosed lamp for re-lamping operations. A prismatic optical device is provided on the luminaire to indicate when the door is fully closed on the refractor.

Floor relampable luminaire

Indoor lighting fixture provides semi-indirect symmetrical light distribution. The fixture comprises a central support tube attached to the ceiling at its upper end and having a high intensity gaseous discharge lamp at its lower end projecting into a box-like housing having a semi-transparent variable transmission lens on its bottom and an interior reflector extending around the lamp for reflecting light rays upwardly toward the ceiling. Vertically spaced louvers arranged encircling the upper portion of the lamp serve to shield the lamp from direct view of the room occupants to avoid glare.

Indoor lighting fixture providing indirect asymmetrical light distribution. The fixture, which is adapted to be positioned adjacent a wall and below a ceiling, comprises a high intensity gaseous discharge lamp and an upwardly opening asymmetric reflector which is inclined to the horizontal for projecting light forwardly and laterally toward the ceiling while restricting light below the horizontal, so as to provide ample, uniformly distributed indirect light in the work area while shielding the light source from direct view of the room occupants to avoid glare.

Indoor lighting fixture providing semi-indirect symmetrical light distribution. The fixture, which is adapted to be positioned adjacent the ceiling of the room comprises a high intensity gaseous discharge lamp mounted at its base on the ceiling and extending downwardly into a box-shaped reflector open at its top with reflective sides and a diffuser panel at its bottom. Positioned in the reflector and surrounding the lower portion of the lamp is a dish-shaped semi-transparent reflector which reflects a portion of the incident light toward the ceiling and transmits a portion of the light to the area below the fixture. The arrangement is such that direct and indirect light is distributed by the fixture while shielding the light source from direct view of the room occupants to avoid glare.
