In one aspect, the disclosure relates to methods and compositions for treatment of cancer cachexia. In a further aspect, the composition is a pharmaceutical composition comprising a class I/IIB HDAC inhibitor and an androgen. In a still further aspect, the method of treatment comprises administering a class I/IIB HDAC inhibitor and an androgen to a subject or patient who has been diagnosed as having cancer cachexia. In some aspects, the class I/IIB HDAC inhibitor is a compound known as AR-42.

Methods and compositions for the treatment of cancer cachexia

Methods of suppressing cachexia in a mammal with cancer comprising administering HDAC inhibitors are provided. Aspects include methods of administering an HDAC class 1 and 2b inhibitor in an amount effective to substantially maintain the mammal's weight compared to a mammal that does receive the HDAC class 1 and 2b inhibitor.

Methods for suppressing cancer-related cachexia

Thiazolidinedione compounds and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof are described. The compounds can be used in methods of treating cancer in a subject by administering to the subject a therapeutically effective amount of the compound. The compounds can also be used in methods of inhibiting glucose uptake in a cell by contacting the cell with the compound.

Glucose transporter inhibitors

A method of treating infection byin a subject by administering a pharmaceutical composition including a celecoxib derivative of formula I or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof is described.The preparation of numerous celecoxib derivatives for testing as potential anti-staphylococcal agents is also described.

Anti-staphylococcal celecoxib derivatives

A number of compounds and use of the compounds in a method for treating or preventing cancer in a subject by administering to the subject a pharmaceutical composition including a compound of formula I or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof are described. The compounds can also be used to inhibit integrin-linked kinase in a cell, which has an effect on the Akt signaling pathway.

Integrin-linked kinase inhibitors

A series of celecoxib derivatives defined by Formula I: were prepared and evaluated for their ability to inhibit the gram-negative bacteria. Pharmaceutical compositions including celecoxib derivatives and their use in methods for treating or preventing infection byin a subject are described.

Tocopheryl succinate derivatives according to formula I: are described. These compounds increase the activity of protein phosphatase 2A, can be included in pharmaceutical compositions, and can be used for the treatment of androgen receptor-dependent cancers such as prostate cancer.

Protein phosphatase 2A-activating agents

Vitamin E succinate derivatives according to formula I: are described. These compounds can be included in pharmaceutical compositions, and can be used for the treatment of cancers such as metastatic cancer and as antiadhesive agents.

Antiadhesion agents

A number of FTY720-derived compounds with antitumor activity are described. These compounds include the compounds of formula I: wherein Ris independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, methyl. methoxy, and hydroxyl; Ris independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, methoxy, and hydroxyl; Ris independently selected from the group consisting of alkyl and cyclo-alkyl; and n is independently selected from 0 to 6. The compounds have lower immunosuppressive side effects as a result of not being phosphorylated by sphingosine kinase 2.
