High areal recording density, magnetic hard disk recording media including CSS landing zones with laser-textured surfaces having shallow bump heights of from about 40 to about 80 &#x212b;, bump spacing in the circumferential and radial directions of from about 10 to about 30 &#x3bc;m, and bump diameter of from about 4 to about 8 &#x3bc;m, are provided for use in disk drive systems utilizing padded head sliders operating at very low head slider flying heights of about 0.7 &#x3bc;inch or below.

A non-linear perluoro polyalkylene or perfluoro polyarylene glycol of specific molecular conformation such as plate-like, spherical, or helical and having the formula CF &mdash;&lsqb;&mdash;(&mdash;RO&mdash;) &mdash;CF &rsqb; , wherein R is a C -C linear or branched, substituted or unsubstituted fluoroalkyl or perfluoroalkyl group, or a substituted or unsubstituted fluoroaryl or perfluoroaryl group; x is an integer from 0 to 2; and n is a number between about 1 to about 20 is provided as a lubricant topcoat on a magnetic recording medium. The inventive lubricants are stable and provide increased bonded lube ratios compared to those of conventional lubricants.

Branched perfluoro polyethylene glycol (PF-PEG) high performance thin film disk lubricants

A material, preferably a magnetic data storage disc, includes a carbon layer covering at least a portion of a magnetic substrate and a crosslinked fluoropolymer layers covering at least-a portion of the carbon layer. The crosslinked polymer layer has a thickness less than about 40 angstroms, and the carbon layer has a thickness less than about 100 angstroms. Preferred fluoropolymers include, for example, perfluoropolyethers. In some embodiments, the crosslinked fluoropolymer layer has a thickness at one point on the carbon layer greater than the thickness crosslinked fluoropolymer layer at another point on the carbon layer. The crosslinking generally is performed by irradiating the lubricant material on the carbon layer.

A fluoropolyether having a nonfunctional silane end group is applied to a magnetic recording medium to form a lubricant topcoat thereon. In an embodiment of the present invention, no less than about 70% of the lubricant applied to the magnetic recording medium forms a bonded topcoat thereto.

Silane derivatized lubricants for magnetic recording media

A lubricant composition comprising a first fluoropolyether and a second fluoropolyether having nitrogen containing end-group exhibits improved resistance to acid and thermal decomposition. Embodiments include a lubricant composition containing a perfluorinate polyalkylether admixed with a perfluorinated polyalkylether having amide terminal groups and applying the composition to the surface of a magnetic recording medium to form a homogeneous lubricant topcoat thereon.

Lubricants with improved stability for magnetic recording media

A method for lubricating a thin film magnetic media is disclosed wherein the magnetic media is lubricated only at the head-disc interface zone. The method comprises the steps of vaporizing the lubricant, mixing the lubricant with a carrier gas stream, and depositing a film of the lubricant on at the loading zone on the surface of the magnetic media. The lubricant film can be selectively deposited on the surface of the magnetic disc at any location and at any thickness. In one embodiment of the invention, the lubricant film forms a radial band on the surface of the magnetic disc located near the outside diameter of the magnetic disc.

Disc lubrication for the load/unload head disc interface

A method for producing a substantially smooth surface on a computer disk media comprises providing a substantially smooth master surface. A curable polymer dielectric composition is applied to the master surface as well as the surface of the disk to be smoothed. The master surface is then pressed onto the disk surface and the polymer is cured. The master surface is then removed and the cured polymer forms a smooth surface on the disk.

Surface planarization of magnetic disk media

A high-fraction, terminally nonfunctional fluoropolyether lubricant topcoat is applied to a magnetic recording medium. The topcoat provides good stiction and wear properties at a low thickness.

Fluoropolyether topcoat lubricants

An information storage system is disclosed. The information storage system includes a rigid information storage medium, at least one read/write head, an actuator, and a lubricant. The read/write head comprises a transducer for information introduction and/or retrieval from the storage medium. The actuator supports at least one read/write head for moving the transducer relative to the storage medium. The lubricant which includes a perfluoroacrylate ester polymer is disposed on the surface of the storage medium.

Perfluoroacrylate ester polymer lubricant for an information storage system

The degree of bonding of a perfluoro polyether lubricant topcoat to a magnetic recording medium is improved by forming a polymeric phosphate derivative thereof. In an embodiment of the present invention, a perfluoro polyether phosphate polymer is formed with a molecular weight of about 1000 to about 5000, and applied to a magnetic recording medium to achieve a bonded lube ratio in excess of 0.9.

Polymeric perfluoro polyether phosphate lubricant topcoat

A lubricant topcoat is applied to a magnetic recording medium under vacuum, thereby eliminating oxidative degradation, increasing lubricant transport properties to the disc surface, increasing uniformity and enabling control of the lubricant molecular weight distribution. Embodiments include positioning the magnetic recording medium in a deposition chamber in communication with a source chamber containing the lubricant and evacuating the chambers to subatmospheric pressure. A heater, attached to the source chamber, elevates the temperature of the lubricant within the source chamber so that the lubricant flows from the source chamber to the deposition chamber and deposits on the magnetic recording medium.

Vacuum assisted lubrication of magnetic recording media

An information storage system including a perfluoropolyether lubricant having hydroxyethyloxymethyl terminated endgroups on the surface of a rigid storage medium is provided. In the subject invention, the perfluoropolyether lubricant has the general repeat formula of: HO,(CH,&mdash;CH,O)CH,&mdash;Z&mdash;CH,(OCH,&mdash;CH,),OH where Z is &mdash;CF,&mdash;(OC,F,),&mdash;(CF,),&mdash;OCF,&mdash;, p has an average value of 1.5, the ratio of m to n is approximately 1.0, and the mean molecular weight of the lubricant is in the range of approximately 2000 to 6000.
