NOx reduction composition for use in FCC processes

A method and apparatus in accordance with the invention is described which comprises treating an engine exhaust gas stream containing hydrocarbons and other pollutants. The method of this invention comprises the steps of flowing the exhaust gas stream through a catalytic member comprising a monolith body having a first catalyst zone and a second catalyst zone therein to contact a catalyst in a first catalyst zone to convert at least some of the pollutants in the exhaust gas stream into innocuous products. The exhaust gas stream is then discharged from the catalytic member and flowed through an adsorbent zone to adsorb at least some of the hydrocarbon pollutants with an adsorbent composition. The exhaust gas stream is then discharged from the adsorbent zone and flowed to the second catalyst zone to convert at least some of the pollutants into innocuous products. The exhaust gas stream, so treated, is then discharged to the atmosphere through suitable discharge means. A preferred adsorbent is a zeolite, having a relatively high silica to alumina ratio and a low relative Bronsted acidity. The preferred adsorbent compositions comprise Beta zeolites. An oxidant such as air may be added to the exhaust gas stream at a point upstream of the second catalyst zone.

A deactivated reforming catalyst comprising a type L zeolite containing a Group VIII noble metal may be regenerated and have enhanced dispersion by a method involving contacting the catalyst with oxygen and water at elevated temperatures, contacting the catalyst at elevated temperatures with a source of chlorine such as HCl or Cl.sub.2, and preferably oxygen and water, contacting the catalyst at elevated temperatures with oxygen and optionally water, and contacting the catalyst at elevated temperatures with hydrogen and optionally water to reduce the catalyst. Preferably the noble metal is platinum.

A catalyst composition suitable for three-way conversion of internal combustion engine, e.g., automobile gasoline engine, exhaust gases includes a catalytic material disposed in on a carrier. The catalytic material contains a co-formed (e.g., co-precipitated) rare earth oxide-zirconia support on which a first rhodium catalytic component is dispersed, and an alumina support having a platinum catalytic component dispersed thereon. The catalytic material may also include a second rhodium catalytic component dispersed on the alumina support bearing the platinum or a second alumina support. The catalytic material may be disposed as a catalytic coating directly on the carrier or upon an optional undercoat which is disposed on the carrier and which includes alumina and optionally, ceria and/or, iron oxide. One or more of a metal oxide which is effective for the suppression of hydrogen sulfide emissions (such as bulk nickel oxide), thermal stabilizers such as alkaline earth oxides, rare earth oxides and zirconia may be dispersed throughout the catalytic coat and/or the undercoat. The present invention also provides a method for treating engine exhaust gases by contacting the gases under conversion conditions with the catalyst composition.

H.sub.2 S formation by three-way catalyst is suppressed by incorporating nickel, manganese or iron oxides into an undercoat layer disposed on a substrate, such as a monolith substrate. A topcoat overlying the undercoat is comprised of a three-way catalyst material which includes one or more of platinum, rhodium and palladium as catalytic metals.

Hydrogen sulfide-suppressing catalyst system

A catalyst composition includes a zirconia support on which is dispersed a limited amount of ceria to provide a zirconia/dispersed ceria support, and a rhodium catalytic component. The ceria content of the zirconia support does not exceed about fifteen percent by weight based on the combined weight of ceria plus zirconia. The resultant catalyst composition enhances the efficiency of three-way conversion catalyst systems in which it is employed, possibly by promoting the water gas shift reaction and the steam reforming of hydrocarbon. The rhodium on zirconia/dispersed ceria support may be combined with a catalytically effective amount of a platinum catalytic component to provide an effective three-way conversion catalyst.

A class of catalysts which exhibit superior activity maintenance in dehydrocyclization reactions are defined as a type L zeolite having exchangeable cations of which at least 75% are selected from Group IA and calcium and barium cations and containing well dispersed particles of at least one Group VIII noble metal where at least 90% of the noble metal prior to reduction thereof is dispersed in the form of particles having a diameter less than 7 .ANG.. The catalysts may also be identified as type L zeolites loaded with at least one Group VIII noble metal which have a terminal cracking index (as a measure of production of pentanes versus butanes from hexane) of at least 1.5.

Zeolite catalyst and process for using said catalyst (C-1591)

A reforming catalyst comprising a type L zeolite containing at least one Group VIII noble metal may be prepared by a method involving contacting the freshly prepared catalyst with oxygen, hydrogen or an inert gas and optionally water at elevated temperatures, contacting the catalyst at elevated temperatures with a source of chlorine such as HCl or Cl.sub.2 and preferably oxygen and water, and contacting the catalyst at elevated temperatures with oxygen and optionally water. Prior to use the catalyst is reduced by contact at elevated temperatures with hydrogen and optionally water. This process enhances the dispersion of the noble metal particles.
