A self-crosslinking polymer consisting essentially of at least 1 mole % of a halohydrin monomer, at least 1 mole % of a tertiary or secondary amine salt monomer, and 0-98 mole % of a vinyl polymerizable monomer other than the halohydrin or amine salt monomers crosslinks, in the presence of a base, at a lower temperature than a polymer without the tertiary or secondary amine salt monomer. Typical polymers contain 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl acrylate or methacrylate; diallylamine hydrochloride, N-isopropyl methacrylamide hydrogen sulfate, dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide, or dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate hydrochloride or acetate; and optionally other monomers such as a vinyl ester, an acrylate, or a dialkyl diallyl ammonium chloride. When the polymers contain a conductive cationic monomer such as dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride, they are useful as electroconductive coatings for paper substrates. An adduct of epichlorohydrin and dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide or dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate may be used in place of the 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl acrylate or methacrylate for the electroconductive coatings.

Electroconductive coatings

A self-crosslinking polymer consisting essentially of at least 1 mole % of a halohydrin monomer, at least 1 mole % of a tertiary or secondary amine salt monomer, and 0-98 mole % of a vinyl polymerizable monomer other than the halohydrin or amine salt monomers crosslinks, in the presence of a base, at a lower temperature than a polymer without the tertiary or secondary amine salt monomer. Typical polymers contain 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl acrylate or methacrylate; diallylamine hydrochloride, N-isopropyl methacrylamide hydrogen sulfate, dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide, or dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate hydrochloride or acetate; and optionally other monomers such as a vinyl ester, an acrylate, or a dialkyl diallyl ammonium chloride. When the polymers contain a conductive cationic monomer such as dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride, they are useful as electroconductive coatings for paper substrates. An adduct of epichlorohydrin and dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide or dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate may be used in place of the 3-chloro-2-hydrodxypropyl acrylate or methacrylate for the electroconductive coatings.

Base-catalyzed, low temperature self-crosslinking polymers

A cement admixture which results in a cement mortar with excellent adhesion to various adherents and with excellent flexibility over a wide range of temperatures, including very low temperatures, contains cement, optionally but preferably sand, and an effective amount of an aqueous emulsion of a cationic acrylate polymer having a Tg between below 10.degree. C. and -40.degree. C. The polymer comprises (a) about 25 to 85% of an acrylate monomer (e.g., butyl acrylate, methylmethacrylate, or 2-ethylhexyl acrylate but not methyl or ethyl acrylate), (b) about 0.5-15% of an alkaline-curable cationic quaternary ammonium salt monomer, and optional monomer(s) other than (a) or (b). The alkaline-curable cationic quaternary ammonium salt units in the polymer are represented by the formula ##STR1## where R is hydrogen or a methyl group; R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 may be the same or different and are a methyl or ethyl group: A is --O-- or --NH--; X is chlorine, bromine, or iodine; Y is an organic or inorganic monovalent anion; and n is 2 or 3.

Alkaline curing emulsions for use in cement admixtures

Improved base coatings for use on paper substrates to be vacuum metallized consist essentially of an organic solvent solution (e.g. ethyl acetate or ethyl acetate/toluene) containing about 10-30 wt. % of a film-forming coating mixture of (a) about 90-98 wt. % of a vinyl acetate/acrylic acid copolymer (97.5-99/1-2.5%) or a vinyl acetate/monoethyl maleate copolymer (94-97/3-6%) and (b) about 2-10 wt. % of a soluble nitrocellulose resin solids, the resin being soluble in the solvent and having a nitrogen content of about 12 wt. % and a viscosity of from about 4-5 sec. in a 25% solution to about 3-4 sec. in a 20% solution of ethyl alcohol/toluene/ethyl acetate (25/55/20), when measured using the Falling Ball method. Paper products coated with the base coating (about 2-6 lbs./3000 ft..sup.2) are characterized by a balanced combination of alkali removability, water-resistance, and block-resistance. The metallized products are smooth and glossy, and the aluminized product is especially useful for bottle labels.
