A mechanism for synchronizing states of components in a first routing engine to corresponding components in a second routing engine is provided. In order to reduce the amount of data required to synchronize the state of the components and the time and resources required to perform the synchronization, the state-related information transmitted from the first routing engine to the second routing engine is limited to information used to build states of a subset of the components associated with the first routing engine. That subset of components is limited to those components that receive stimuli (e.g., data streams or data packets) from sources external to the routing engine. Other components on the second routing engine synchronize state by receiving information from those components on the second routing engine that received the external stimuli information.

Session redundancy using a replay model

Connectivity Fault Management (CFM) auto-provisioning using Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) auto-discovery is described. In one embodiment, an apparatus comprises VPLS logic and configuration logic. The VPLS logic is operable at least to receive and send configuration information for a VPLS instance, where the configuration information comprises: a first value that uniquely identifies the VPLS instance; and a plurality of second values that respectively and uniquely identify a plurality of network elements that are operable to provide the VPLS instance. The configuration logic is operable at least to automatically configure, based on the first value and on the plurality of second values, a CFM association and a local maintenance endpoint (MEP) for the VPLS instance on the apparatus.

Connectivity fault management (CFM) auto-provisioning using virtual private LAN service (VPLS) auto-discovery

An apparatus is provided in one example embodiment and it includes a first node coupled to an active endpoint and a standby endpoint. The first node communicates with a second node. When the active endpoint experiences a failure, the standby endpoint is activated such that a communication involving the second node continues. The standby endpoint communicates a complete window's worth of packets to the second node after the failure, the window's worth of packets including a last known sequence number acknowledged by the second node. In more specific embodiments, the first node is an L2TP network server (LNS) and the second node is an L2TP access concentrator (LAC). The last known sequence number was check pointed by the active endpoint to the standby endpoint.
