A mirror assembly can include a mirror, a display device, a window configured to provide a view of the display device, and a display region disposed on the front surface of the mirror. The mirror can include a glass layer, a dielectric layer, and a metal layer. In some embodiments, the glass layer is disposed closest to a user. The dielectric layer can include one or more alternating layers of Titanium dioxide and Silicon dioxide. In some embodiments, the display region is positioned outside of a central region of the mirror. The mirror assembly can include a first mirror coupled to a second mirror. In some embodiments, the transmissivity of the second mirror is higher than the transmissivity of the first mirror. In some embodiments, the reflectance of the second mirror is higher than the reflectance of the first mirror.

A compact, efficient illumination system has many advantages over conventional illuminators based upon integrating spheres. An elliptical light source/concentrator, preferably controlled by a light stabilization system using optical feedback to control the light intensity, provides high spatial uniformity of high irradiance values can be produced over sizeable areas for testing large area detector arrays. The illuminator is simpler and more economical than traditional systems and provides extended wavelength coverage potential. The illumination system is easy to maintain.

A scanner window through which a laser beam is projected to define a scanning pattern comprises a substrate formed of light transmissive material which allows the laser beam to project through a light transmissive hard material layer deposited onto the substrate, and a light transmissive lubricous coating deposited onto the hard material resulting in the scanner window having improved resistance to abrasive wear. The present invention is also directed to a method of producing such a scanner window. The present method may incorporate various deposition techniques to form a wear resistant scanner window in accordance with the present invention.

A durable quarter wave antireflection coating for a photodetecting device 20, the photodetecting device being formed within a radiation absorbing layer 22 of HgCdTe which is epitaxially grown upon a surface of a substantially transparent Group II-VI substrate 24 having an index of refraction of between approximately 2.2 and 2.8. By example, the substrate 24 may comprise CdZnTe or CdTe. The antireflection coating 26 is formed upon a radiation receiving surface of the substrate 24. The antireflection coating may comprise a layer of CeO.sub.x F.sub.(3.0-x), where x has a value within the range of approximately zero to approximately 1.0. The CeO.sub.x F.sub.(3.0-x) layer is formed by an ion beam sputter technique, the CeO.sub.x F.sub.(3-x) layer being sputtered from a source comprised of CeF.sub.3 in the presence of a predetermined pressure of oxygen. In general, the antireflection coating may comprise a fluoride compound formed with a metal of the Lanthanide rare earth series which is substantially transparent to infrared radiation.

An article of manufacture includes a substrate carrying at least two coating layers, one layer being of approximately quarter wave optical thickness, the other layer of approximately two quarter wave optical thickness, with the layers alternating between a material such as a dielectric having a first index of refraction and a second material such as a dielectric having a second index of refraction lower than the first index of refraction. These layers form a filtering system which removes narrow bands of light such as laser wavelengths by efficient reflection while permitting the remainder of the light spectrum to pass through the article. The coating layers have optical thicknesses and indices of refraction appropriate to reflect more than 99% of incident light at one or more predetermined wavelengths of light in the range of about 300 to about 1,200 nanometers and to transmit a substantial amount of all other incident light in the range. These articles are made by an electron beam evaporation technique under vacuum and under controlled conditions of temperature, partial pressure of oxygen, and deposition rates.
