Provided herein is an apparatus, including a magnetically soft underlayer (SUL); an interlayer stack overlying the SUL, wherein the interlayer stack comprises a seed layer of an fcc material; and a perpendicular magnetic recording layer overlying the interlayer stack, wherein a thickness of the SUL in combination with a distance of the SUL from the perpendicular recording layer is sufficient to orient a total magnetic field corresponding to a magnetic transducer head at an angle of about 45&#xb0;.

Chromium-alloy seedlayers for recording media

Corrosion resistant magnetic thin film media are fabricated using a CoCr magnetic layer having a stabilized protective chromium oxide film thereon. Stabilization of the protective chromium oxide film is achieved by incorporating a stabilizing element, such as Mo, V, Mn, Nb, Ni or Si, in the magnetic layer, thereby enabling elimination of the protective overcoat, e.g., C-containing protective overcoat, or forming the protective overcoat at a significantly low thickness of less than about 20 &angst;, e.g., up to about 1 &angst;. Embodiments include forming a magnetic layer comprising Co and Cr on an underlayer, and then forming a thin magnetic layer containing Co and Cr with the chromium oxide stabilizing element thereon. Embodiments further include introducing the chromium oxide stabilizing element by diffusion or ion implantation into a sputter deposited Co&mdash;Cr magnetic alloy layer.

Corrosion resistant magnetic thin film media

A magnetic recording medium on glass or Al substrates with film structures of CrV/NiAl/CrMo/CoCrTa/CoCrPtTaNbB and CrMo/CoCrTa/CoCrPtTaNbB exhibit high coercivity and high signal-to-medium noise ratio. The medium can be used for high-density longitudinal magnetic recording. Embodiments include forming a sub-seed layer on a NiP-plated aluminum substrate, and sequentially depositing a seed layer, an underlayer, an intermediate layer and a magnetic layer on the substrate. The magnetic layer contains at least six elements, including Co, Cr and B.

CoCrPtTaNbB alloy for magnetic recording medium

High bit density, longitudinal and/or perpendicular magnetic recording media that are substantially free of Barkhausen noise are fabricated by utilizing magnetically soft, superparamagnetic underlayers which are compatible with the grain structure of the magnetic recording layer and serve to guide magnetic flux through the magnetic layer. An exchange de-coupling layer is positioned between the superpararnagnetic underlayer and the magnetic layer for prevention of direct coupling of the grains of each the layers.

A magnetic recording medium on glass or Al substrates with film structure of NiAl seed layer/CrMo underlayer/CoCrPtB magnetic layer/carbon overcoat, in which the magnetic layer has a substantially (10.0) crystallographic orientation, exhibits high coercivity, high signal-to-medium noise ratio and low transition jitter. The medium can be used for high-density longitudinal magnetic recording. Embodiments include forming a surface oxidized NiAl sub-seed layer on a glass or glass-ceramic substrate, and sequentially depositing a seed layer of NiAl, an underlayer of Cr or Cr-alloy, such as CrMo, and a CoCrPtB magnetic layer.

CoCrPtB medium with a 1010 crystallographic orientation

Magnetic recording media including an alternative substrate material having a Young's Modulus greater than that of Al-based substrate materials and a preselected average surface roughness (Ra) are formed by depositing a continuous, adherent, non-magnetic, catalytically active layer on a surface of the substrate and electrolessly plating an amorphous seed layer on the catalytically active layer, the Ra of the resultant surface of the amorphous seed layer being reduced from that of the substrate, thereby providing a substantially defect-free surface for deposition thereon of magnetic recording media layers thereon. Embodiments include sputter depositing an catalytically active layer of Ni&mdash;Al or Ni&mdash;P and electrolessly plating an amorphous seed layer of Ni&mdash;P thereon.
