An arrangement for assuring ink ribbon and correction tape compatibility in a device which utilizes a first cassette having an ink ribbon therein and second cassette having a correction tape therein in the operation thereof, the arrangement including engaging formations located on the first and second cassettes which ensure that the ink ribbon and correction tape are functionally compatible with each other when the respective cassettes are inserted in the device such as, for example, functional compatibility between a single-strike ink ribbon and a lift-off correction tape, or functional compatibility between a multiple-strike ink ribbon and a cover-up correction tape.

A means for assuring ink ribbon and correction tape compatibility in a device which utilizes a first cassette having an ink ribbon therein and second cassette having a correction tape therein including a switch means in the device that controls the on-off condition of the device, and means located on one of the cassettes which will activate the on-off switch only when the device contains an ink ribbon in the first cassette which is functionally compatible with the correction tape in the second cassette, such as, for example, functional compatibility between a single-strike ink ribbon and a lift-off correction tape, or functional compatibility between a multiple-strike ink ribbon and a cover-up correction tape.

Ink ribbon and correction tape cassette compatibility

A ribbon or tape tensioning system for typewriter correction ribbons includes a brake for exerting a braking force on a supply or feed ribbon spool. The mounting capstan for the feed spool is provided with a toothed hub which can be engaged by a pawl rotatably mounted on an arm which in turn is rotatably mounted on the typewriter frame. The pawl and the arm are provided with abutments or projections which when brought into contact with the frame cause the pawl to disengage or engage the toothed hub, thus permitting the hub to rotate freely or be braked. A force applied by an element such as a spring biases the assembly in a direction to cause the capstan to exert a tension on the ribbon, except when the pawl is disengaged. When the tension on the ribbon exceeds a predetermined amount, the pawl is disengaged from the toothed hub, permitting its momentary rotation and relief of the tension.

A releasable ribbon locking device is used to keep a ribbon taut in a typewriter ribbon cartridge. The device includes a locking member carrying a blade or brake urged by a spring into abutting relationship with a rotatable ribbon supply support to prevent unwinding of fresh ribbon from the supply. A lock release member is movably coupled to the locking member and supports a ribbon tensioning element in engagement with a portion of the ribbon extending from the ribbon supply. In operation, a ribbon feed mechanism pulls on the ribbon which moves the lock release member through the tensioning element and correspondingly moves the locking member to rotatably free the ribbon supply support from abutment with the brake and allows the ribbon to unwind from the supply. Upon completion of the ribbon feed operation, the spring operates to move the brake against the supply support for preventing indiscriminate unwinding of the ribbon and to move the tensioning element so as to continually engage the ribbon in order to maintain it taut in the cartridge.

A speed retarding governor particularly adaptable to a carriage of a typewriter wherein the speed of a traversing typewriter carriage is retarded by the cooperation of a plurality of arcuate pivotless lightweight flyweights that are floatably disposed within a cylindrical governor housing. A drive pin fixed to a rotating typewriter escapement toothed drive wheel engages an end of a first flyweight which abuts a second flyweight whereby both flyweights rotate therewith. The centrifugal force thus generated forces the two felt-lined flyweights outwardly against the internal peripheral surface of the governor housing which has now been rendered stationary, to produce a retarding force necessary to retard the speed of the traversing carriage.

The uppermost contour of the teeth of the pulley in combination with the contour of the valleys therebetween, when functionally engaged by a standard positive drive timing belt, provides a quiet running power transmission drive system.

A method and mechanism for automatically performing typewriter functions such as backspacing a carriage. The backspace mechanism is actuated by the insertion and removal of a ribbon cartridge that is placed on and guided by a ribbon cartridge platform and is especially suited for use in conjunction with the correction of erroneously typed characters. The ribbon cartridge carries a pair of cam surfaces that engage a pair of typewriter backspace coupled cam surfaces to actuate a backspace function upon insertion and again upon removal of the ribbon cartridge. Therefore, automatic multiple backspacing of the typewriter carriage occurs when performing an error correcting operation simply by inserting and removing a correction ribbon cartridge. Although a backspace function has been selected for purposes of demonstration, the hereafter disclosed embodiment may be utilized to actuate other typewriter functions upon the insertion and removal of the ribbon cartridge.

Automatic function mechanism for typewriters

A typewriter ribbon cartridge having a camming abutment thereon for engaging one or more typewriter function responsive means to thereby actuate the typewriter function mechanism when the ribbon cartridge is inserted into the typewriter and thereafter to re-engage the responsive means to actuate the function mechanism a second time when the ribbon cartridge is removed from the typewriter.

A drive system for an electric typewriter has a power roll driven by an electric motor through a drive belt and a pulley rotatably mounted and resiliently connected to the power roll. The driving energy transmitted to the type action of the machine is controlled by energy-absorbing means adjustably connected to the power roll pulley and controlled through appropriate linkage by the machine operator to vary the energy absorbed by the resilient connection between the power roll and the pulley. A self adjusting means is also provided to set the proper tension on the drive belt of the drive system.
