A simpler and new process for the polycondensation of a sulfonated coal tar fraction comprising: sulfonating a coal tar fraction having a distillation range of 200.degree. to 240.degree. at normal pressure, with an excess of 20-30% mole of sulfuric acid, as opposed to 105% in the prior art, for 4-8 hours at a temperature of 160.degree. C..+-.10.degree. C. under reflux. The product is diluted with water to render it fluid at about 80.degree. C. and molar ratio of formaldehyde per mole of the sulfonated coal tar fraction is then added gradually at a temperature of about 85.degree. C..+-.5.degree. C., then gradually heated for about 1 to 4 hours at 100.degree. to 106.degree. C., and then further raised to 106.degree. C.-120.degree. C. for 2 to 4 hours. The product is then cooled and neutralized. With this process, new polycondensates with improved properties are produced. The polycondensation including neutralization is completed within 16 hours from the time the formaldehyde is added.

Polycondensates of sulfonated coal tar fractions

A method to make and a base mix fabric softener composition of a concentrate remaining substantially pumpable after transportation and on standing, said concentrate comprising: (a) between 80 to 20% by weight of at least one quaternary ammonium compound having the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each independently selected from the class consisting of alkyl and alkenyl groups having 12 to 20 carbon atoms, and R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are each independently selected from the class consisting of C.sub.1 to C.sub.3 alkyl, (C.sub.n H.sub.2n O)H.sub.x where n=2 or 3 and x is from 1 to 3, and (b) between 20 to 80% by weight of at least one alkyl substitute imidazolinium compound having the general formula: ##STR2## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each independently selected from the class consisting of alkyl and alkenyl groups having 12 to 20 carbon atoms, and X is Cl.sup.- or CH.sub.3 SO.sub.4 said concentrate of (a) and (b) being dissolved in a member selected from the class consisting of at least one alcohol, or of a mixture of at least one alcohol and water, said at least one alcohol having a low alkyl chain of 1 to 3 carbon atoms.

Base mix fabric softener

The present invention relates to specialty pitches having low Q.I. content, lower viscosity, lower average Q.I. particle size, lower ash content, higher toluene insoluble and beta-resin content. They may be prepared by extracting the coal-tar material with a solvent, where the solvent contains at least one n-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and the wash oil fraction of coal-tar distillate. The solvent-dissolved fraction of the coal-tar material is then distilled to obtain the specialty pitch material.

Modified coal-tar pitch

The present invention relates to a process for decreasing and modifying the quinoline-insoluble content (Q.I.) of coal-tar materials; and comprises extracting the coal-tar material with a solvent, where the solvent contains at least one of n-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and the wash oil fraction of coal-tar distillate. Pitches with a diminished Q.I. content, lower viscosity and lower average Q.I. particle size, may be prepared from coal-tar materials which have been so treated.

Process for modifying coal tar materials

The present invention relates to fabric conditioning compositions containing quaternary ammonium compounds and fatty alcohols or phosphoric acid esters thereof, in admixture with a diluent, where the compositions are pumpable at room temperature and are easily dispersed in water.

This invention relates to a novel means of manufacture of gypsum board. The improvement herein comprises the use of sodium and/or ammonium salts of ethoxylated, sulfated alcohols as foaming agents, said alcohols being a mixture of primary, linear alcohols having an average chain length of 9 carbon atoms.
