A character compaction and generation method and apparatus which is particularly adapted to the compaction and generation of complex characters such as Kanji characters. Each character in a complex character set is defined by an I row and J column dot matrix, wherein each row is comprised of J bytes. Each successive row of a given character is scanned from the first through the Jth byte to determine if the current byte being scanned has the same numerical value as the immediately preceding or directly above byte in the scanning sequence. The number of successively read out sequence of bytes that have the same numerical value as the immediately preceding or directly above byte are coded as single symbols words Pn and Am, respectively, where n and m are integers which are indicative of the number of successive bytes scanned in sequence which are equal in numerical value to each immediately preceding or directly above byte. If a current byte being scanned is not of the same numerical value as the previous byte or the above byte, it is coded as a single symbol Sx, where x is an integer which is indicative of its numerical value. Each of the successively generated symbols Pn, Am and Sx for a given complex character are stored as a compacted complex representation thereof.

Complex character generator utilizing byte scanning

The present invention relates to a dot matrix printer which makes use of multiple dot patterns distributed on the cylinder, belt, hand or drum of a line printer to provide an improved printing throughput for an all addressable line printer. In a dot-helix matrix printer, different arrangements of the dots are used which can be varied in position and spacing to increase printing speed. On a belt, band or drum line printer, multiple dot patterns are given a predetermined distribution. More specifically, arrangements of dots are used which provide enhanced performance due to the fact that they are determined by an analysis of the statistical occurrence of a particular dot pattern in a character set. The higher statistical probability dot patterns are used more often on the belt, band or drum.

Dot matrix printer

A method of data compression which allows an enlarged font of complex characters to be produced by scaling from data representing a stored font of complex characters is disclosed. The scaling procedure involves the insertion of horizontal and vertical lines into the stored font to effect vertical and horizontal expansion, respectively, of the stored font. These lines are inserted so as to preserve the basic shape of the characters according to the following procedure. First, the dot matrix of each character is partitioned into sections, each containing a very pronounced and recognizable portion of the character. Then a decision is made in which sections to insert lines so that enlargement is attained without distorting the basic overall shape of the character. Next, a decision is made where in the sections the lines are to be inserted. Finally, a decision is made as to what the inserted lines are to look like. The results of these decisions are stored with data representing the stored font as side information so that an enlarged version of the font can be generated on the fly without need of arithmetic processing. A refinement of this basic technique additionally stores a sparse matrix containing the error of the generated matrix as compared with the original one. This additional information permits the generation of the exact duplicate of the original font.

Kanji/Chinese font generation by scaling

A variable speed printing (VSP) adaptor for a dot matrix printer which includes a monitoring means having a plurality of devices each capable of assuming one of two states. The monitoring means monitors the state of the pattern data to be printed, and, in the preferred embodiment, the monitoring means comprises a counter which is preset with a number equal to the number of column scans with a dot print line. The pattern data to be printed is scanned in a forward direction, i.e., in the normal printing direction starting at the first print position and the count in the counter is decremented one count for each column data scanned. During the time interval between when this data is latched and the actual hammer actuation, the pattern data is scanned in the backward direction starting at the last print position. Each time the column data for a backward scan is zero, i.e., no dot to be printed, prior to sensing a non-zero column, the count in the counter is decremented one count. The printing operation continues in the interleaved forward/backward scans until the count in the counter reaches a reference level such as zero. Upon sensing this reference level in the counter, a control signal is generated which indicates that the printing of the dot row is complete and initiates movement of the paper to the next dot row position. In an alternate embodiment, the monitoring means comprises a random access storage device.

Each character in the complex character set is compacted and stored in memory one time only, with decompaction being performed each time a given character is to be generated. A set of symbols are defined to represent different patterns which occur frequently in the entire complex character set. Different combinations of the symbols define a given character. The information stored for each sparse matrix representing a given character is comprised of each symbol in the sparse matrix, its position, and its size parameter if the symbol represents a family of patterns which differ only in size. Three groups of different patterns are defined which occur frequently in the complex character set, namely, a first group which has a fixed size for each pattern, a second group which has one size parameter which must be specified for each pattern, and a third group which has a plurality of size parameters which must be specified for each pattern.

A thin-film integrated circuit with tank circuit characteristics may comprise a surface acoustic wave transducer with appropriate geometry. A preferred embodiment of such integrated circuit includes, in addition to the surface acoustic wave transducer, surface acoustic wave reflecting means located adjacent the transducer, and preferably on opposite sides thereof. The reflecting means may include a pair of reflectors and be proportioned so that the device exhibits a single resonant-anti-resonant frequency pair, such as a single tank circuit. Alternatively, the reflectors may be proportioned such that the device exhibits multiple resonant-anti-resonant frequency pairs. The operating frequency may be as high as hundreds of megahertz to one gigahertz. Applications of the thin-film integrated circuit to thin-film filters and oscillators are also disclosed. In addition a novel form of surface acoustic wave transducer is disclosed which exhibits lower equivalent capacitance than do prior art surface acoustic wave transducers.

A switching device for switching an optical beam between first and second outputs each associated with first and second paths in a thin-film optical wave guide supported on a substrate. Switching occurs by reason of mode conversion in a first or second path as determined by the direction of a variable magnetic field. A common optical path is defined, in said wave guide, by a first optical coupler, for coupling an optical beam into or out of said wave guide, and a beam splitter. First and second optical paths are defined, in the same wave guide, between the beam splitter and second and third couplers each co-linear with said beam splitter. At least a portion of each of said first and second optical paths include means for periodically varying the magnetization in said path. The wave guide is subjected to a d.c. magnetic field in the plane of the wave guide and at an angle with respect to both said first and second paths. Preferably the first and second paths are perpendicular and the d.c. field makes a 45.degree. angle with each of said paths. A variable magnetic field is superimposed on the d.c. field and is directed perpendicular to the d.c. field, in the plane of the wave guide. The variable magnetic field may be energized in one of two senses, 180.degree. apart, each, of course, perpendicular to the d.c. field direction. Analyzers may be located adjacent the second and third couplers to comprise the outputs referred to above.
