Compositions useful for activating catalysts for olefin polymerization, and methods for making same, are provided. Such compositions can be derived from at least: an organoaluminum compound, a carrier, an oxygen source, and, optionally, a Lewis base.

Aluminoxane compositions derived from aluminoxane source, halogen source, and Lewis base are provided. Such compositions are useful for activating catalysts for olefin polymerization.

Aluminoxane compositions, their preparation, and their use in catalysis

Novel haloaluminoxane compositions have been formed. The halogen is fluorine, chlorine, and/or bromine, and the amount of halogen atoms present in said composition is in the range of about 0.5 mole % to about 15 mole % relative to aluminum atoms. Processes for producing haloaluminoxane compositions are also provided.

Haloaluminoxane compositions, their preparation, and their use in catalysis

Novel haloaluminoxane compositions have been formed. The halogen is fluorine, chlorine, and/or bromine, and the amount of halogen atoms present in said composition is in the range of about 0.5 mole % to about 15 mole % relative to aluminum atoms.

A solution of a siloxy-aluminoxane composition formed by mixing (i) a hydrocarbylsiloxane substantially free of hydroxyl groups with (ii) an aluminoxane, in an organic solvent medium in which the molar ratio of aluminum to hydrocarbylsiloxane is from 1:1 to 1000:1, is heated under reduced pressure to form a more concentrated solution. A siloxy-aluminoxane composition having greater solution stability than the initial siloxy-aluminoxane composition is thereby produced.

Method of stabilizing hydrocarbylaluminoxanes

Catalysts deposited on a support are described. The catalyst itself is formed by combining (i) a metallocene of a transition, lanthanide or actinide metal and (ii) a siloxy-aluminoxane composition which comprises an aluminoxane which contains hydrocarbyl-siloxane moieties which are free of Si-OH groups, wherein the molar ratio of aluminum to hydrocarbylsiloxane is from about 1:1 to 1000:1. The siloxy-aluminoxane composition used is free of Si-OH groups, and the aluminoxane of the siloxy-aluminoxane composition was formed by partial hydrolysis of trialkylaluminum. Supports for the catalysts are particulate inorganic oxides, preferably silica, alumina, silica-alumina, or a mixture thereof, or resinous polyolefin support materials.

Supported hydrocarbylsiloxy-aluminoxane catalyst compositions

The reaction between an alkylaluminum compound such as trimethylaluminum and carbon dioxide or an organic carbonyl reagent such as benzoic acid or benzophenone is facilitated and accelerated by contacting these reactants in the presence of an inert organic solvent/diluent and a catalytic quantity of water. The process is preferably conducted using continuous feeds of the components to the reaction zone. The proportions of (I) and (ii) fed to the reactor are maintained such that there are about 1.4 to about 2.2 moles of alkylaluminum per mole of oxygen atoms as CO.sub.2 or the organic carbonyl reagent, and the weight ratio of aluminum alkyl to the solvent/diluent is preferably in the range ca. 20:80 to ca. 60:40. Polyalkylaluminoxanes formed in the process can have better solubility in paraffinic or cycloparaffinic hydrocarbons, and also greater storage stability.

Alkylaluminoxane compositions and their preparation

Siloxy-aluminoxane compositions which are the reaction products of hydrocarbylsiloxanes and aluminoxanes and which have improved solubility and stability even at up to 60 weight percent when compared to the original aluminoxane. The compositions in combination with metallocenes of transition lanthanide and actinide metals form catalysts which can be used in the polymerization of olefins such as ethylene.

Hydrocarbylsiloxy-aluminoxane compositions

Olefin polymerization catalysts are described that comprise the reaction product of (a) a metallocene and/or a Ziegler-Natta catalyst compound (TICl.sub.4, etc.,) and (b) a liquid clathrate composition formed from (i) an aluminoxane, (ii) an organic, inorganic or organometallic compound, and (iii) an aromatic solvent. These liquid clathrates are obtained by the reaction, in aromatic solvents, of aluminoxanes such as, methylaluminoxane, with organic, inorganic or organometallic compounds that form stable clathrates with the aluminoxane and the solvent.

An aluminoxane product is prepared by reacting water which contains a stabilizing agent, such as a lithium halide, with a hydrocarbyl aluminum compound, such as tri-methylaluminum, in an organic solvent. The product has increased resistance to gel-formation therein because of the stabilizing agent dissolved in the water used in forming the reaction product.

Novel aluminum-containing compositions having increased paraffin-solubility are produced from a methylaluminoxane composition having lower paraffin-solubility. These compositions are formed by mixing in liquid phase (A) at least one aluminum trialkyl (or solution or suspension formed therefrom), where the aluminum trialkyl has at least 30 carbon atoms in the molecule, where each alkyl group thereof is bifurcated in the 2-position into a pair of branches, where one such branch has n carbon atoms and the other such branch has at least n+2 carbon atoms, and where n is at least 3; and (B) at least one methylaluminoxane composition having lower heptane-solubility (or a solution or slurry formed therefrom). Preferably, the resultant mixture is agitated at one or more elevated temperatures at which the mixture becomes even more homogeneous. The aluminum trialkyl preferably is one or more in which there are at least 36 carbon atoms in the molecule, in which n is at least 4 and in which the longer branch of the bifurcated alkyl groups has n+2 carbon atoms.

Production of hydrocarbon-soluble hydrocarbylaluminoxanes

Siloxy-aluminoxane compositions which are the reaction products of hydrocarbylsiloxanes substantially-free of Si--OH groups, and aluminoxanes and which have improved solubility and stability in solution even at up to 60 weight percent when compared to the original aluminoxane. The compositions in combination with metallocenes of transition lanithanide and actinide metals form catalysts which can be used in the polymerization of olefins such as ethylene.

A aluminoxane product is prepared by reacting water which contains a stabilizing agent, such as a lithium halide, with a hydrocarbyl aluminum compound, such as trimethylaluminum, in an organic solvent.

Stable liquid clathrate aluminoxane compositions are obtained by the reaction, in aromatic solvents, of aluminoxanes such as, methylaluminoxane, with organic, inorganic or organometallic compounds, such as salts, which can dissociate or partially dissociate into cationic and anionic species (M-X species).
