A clamp assembly for mounting a tonneau cover on a motor vehicle having a cargo area defined by first and second side walls, an end wall and a tailgate, the side walls having an inner panel and an outer panel includes a fastener, a first coupler plate and a bracket. The first coupler plate has a first end and a second end. The first coupler plate is articulable from an operable position to a disengaged position. The bracket has a generally horizontal rail and a vertical rail. The bracket is adapted for contacting the outer panel of the first side wall and further has a seat pivotally retaining the first end of the first coupler plate. The second end of the first coupler plate is adapted for engaging the inner panel of the first side wall defining a first restraining area between the horizontal rail and the second end of the first coupler plate. A second restraining area between the vertical rail and the second end of the first coupler plate is also defined. The fastener detachably interconnects the first coupler plate and the bracket when the first coupler plate is in the operable position.

The method of fabricating a C-clamp composed of a base section having a first jaw extending from one end thereof and a second jaw extending from the opposite end thereof to define a jaw opening. The free end of the first jaw is provided with a first clamp pad affixed thereto facing the jaw opening. An elongate pressure screw is threadedly mounted in the free end of the second jaw and is movable upon threaded rotation relative the second jaw towards and away from the first clamp pad. A polygonal head member having two parallel sides is formed at one end of the pressure screw. An elongate extruded handle having a channel-shaped cross section slidably receives the head member, the parallel sides of the head member being in sliding surface engagement with the inner walls of the handle member. The handle ends are formed to retain the handle on the head member. A swivel ball is formed at the opposite end of the pressure screw. A second clamp pad formed of an extruded member having an arcuate cross-section dimensionally corresponding to the swivel ball diameter, slidably receives the swivel ball. The sides of the extruder member are pinched on either side of the swivel ball to retain the ball between the pinched area in swiveling relation to the extruded member.

Method of fabricating C-clamp

A C-frame composed of a base section having a first jaw extending from one end thereof and a second jaw extending from the opposite end thereof to define a jaw opening. The free end of the first jaw is provided with a first clamp pad affixed thereto facing the jaw opening. An elongate pressure screw is threadedly mounted in the free end of the second jaw and is movable upon threaded rotation relative the second jaw towards and away from the first clamp pad. A polygonal head member having two parallel sides is formed at one end of the pressure screw. An elongate extruded handle having a channel-shaped cross section slidably receives the head member, the parallel sides of the head member being in sliding surface engagement with the inner walls of the handle member. The handle ends are formed to retain the handle on the head member. A swivel ball is formed at the opposite end of the pressure screw. A second clamp pad formed of an extruded member having an arcuate cross-section dimensionally corresponding to the swivel ball diameter, slidably receives the swivel ball. The sides of the extruded member are pinched on either side of the swivel ball to retain the ball between the pinched areas in swiveling relation to the extruded member.
