The present disclosure relates to an improved method for preparing carbon fiber via modified stabilization and carbonization methods during a process of forming filaments of co-polymers comprising acrylonitrile (AN) and vinyl imidazole (VIM) by adding an additive during the during the extrusion process to decrease stabilization temperature, increase crosslinking during oxidation, or decrease the temperatures of carbonization.

A quad-polymer composition includes monomers of (a) acrylonitrile, (a) vinylimidazole, (c) methyl acrylate and (d) either acrylic acid or itaconic acid. Such quad-polymer compositions may be used to form fibers (such as by melt spinning) that may then be annealed, stabilized, and/or carbonized to produce carbon fibers. The quad-polymer composition may be used for supercapacitors, lithium battery electrodes once carbonized, and as synthesized, it may be used for wound healing fibers, fabrics, coatings, and films, and anti-bacterial/anti-microbial fibers, fabrics, coatings and films. The carbon fibers formed from the quad-polymer composition may be used for the fiber composites for automobile, aerospace structures, marine structures, military equipment/parts, sporting goods, robotics, furniture, and electronic parts.

Graphene is a single layer carbon-based material known for high strength, high flexibility, high electrical conductivity, high surface area, hydrophobicity and barrier property. Introduction of surface functional groups on graphene enhances most of these properties. A facile and economical process to prepare amine and fluoride functionalized graphenes is disclosed. The disclosed processes utilize direct functionalization of pristine graphene without pre-functionalization (GO). Successful functionalization of both aminated and fluorinated graphenes were confirmed by the analyses of FT-IR, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), Raman, UV-Vis, and dispersion study. Amine functional groups can react with epoxy resin and urethane resin to form a covalent bond, and fluorinated graphene can give high hydrophobicity and durability, therefore both can be applied as a material or a component in polymer and composite coatings for corrosion protection, moisture or gas barriers.
