A method in a network device is described and includes selecting, based upon a service request, one or more device gateways from a plurality of device gateways that are communicatively coupled with a plurality of low powered devices. The low powered devices do not include Subscriber Identity Modules. Configuration information is transmitted over a public network to the selected device gateways, causing the selected device gateways to configure ones of the low power devices to perform actions according to the service request. Data is received from the selected device gateways over the public network that was generated by the configured low power devices. One or more GPRS Tunnel Protocol (GTP) tunnels are established with a Packet Data Network (PDN) gateway of a mobile network operator, and the received data is sent over the one or more GTP tunnels to be processed by the mobile network operator.

According to another embodiment of the invention, TWAMP path discovery is performed to determine a sequence of IP addresses of a forward direction TWAMP E2E path to be traversed by two different TWAMP test sessions between a Sender and a Reflector. Then, additional TWAMP test request packets are transmitted for the different TWAMP test sessions; and TWAMP test reply messages are received responsive to respective ones of the TWAMP test request packets. Responsive to the TWAMP test reply messages, a PM is determined that is specific to the different sequences of IP addresses of the forward direction TWAMP E2E paths traversed by the two different TWAMP test sessions.

A method in a network device coupled with a packet data network (PDN) gateway of a mobile operator is described. The method includes transmitting configuration information to a low powered device gateway coupled with a plurality of low powered devices based on a received configuration request, wherein the low powered device gateway does not include a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM). The method further includes communicating with an AAA server to authenticate a selection of the plurality of low powered devices and establishing a GPRS Tunnel Protocol (GTP) tunnel with the PDN gateway. The method further includes receiving from the low powered device gateway collected data from the selection of the plurality of low powered devices and sending to the PDN gateway the collected data.

Methods of Internet of Things (IoT) device access are disclosed. In one embodiment, a method is implemented in a software-defined networking (SDN) controller. The method includes receiving a node discovery request from a network device that receives a unicast neighbor solicitation message from an electronic device that supports IPv6. The unicast neighbor solicitation message contains an IPv6 address to be registered. The method also includes causing a device entry to be generated in a device discovery table, and transmitting an acknowledgment to the network device upon the device entry being generated successfully. The method continues with transmitting a request to the network device to generate a flow table entry for the electronic device based on a policy table. The flow table entry includes an operation to be performed, and the network device is to perform the operation on a packet received matching the flow table entry.

Method and system for an internet of things (IOT) device access in a software-defined networking (SDN) system

A scheme for providing access to 6LoWPAN data in a wireless access network comprising a Digital Unit (DU) coupled to one or more Radio Units (RU) via CPRI links, each RU in turn coupled to one or more radio dot (RD) elements via Ethernet cable links. In one embodiment, an RD element includes a cable front-end interfaced with the Ethernet cable link, a radio front-end interfaced between the cable front-end and an antenna or a suitable access point. A sensor component may be included that is configured to generate sensor data with respect to a measurement variable, which sensor data may be packaged in a 6LoWPAN data format for transmission to the RU element coupled to the RD element.

Active antenna element (AAE) implementation for facilitating 6LoWPAN data access

A scheme for providing access to 6LoWPAN data in a Pico-Remote Radio Unit (PRRU)-based wireless access network. In one embodiment, the PRRU network comprises a Baseband Unit (BBU) coupled to one or more remote Radio Hub (RHUB) elements via a first set of CPRI links, each RHUB element in turn coupled to one or more PRRU elements via corresponding second sets of CPRI links. The BBU element comprises an interface for communicating 6LoWPAN data to and from a router coupled to an IPv6 network. The BBU element also includes a bridging functionality operative to determine endpoint PRRU elements' addresses and corresponding RHUB elements' addresses by querying an address mapping database.

Pico-RRU-based network implementation for facilitating 6LOWPAN data access

A method in a network controller of a control plane in a software defined network (SDN) coupled to a plurality of network elements (NEs) of a data plane in the SDN is described. The method includes at least sending a first control message to an ingress NE of the plurality of NEs to initiate a first test session; sending a second control message to an egress NE of the plurality of NEs to initiate a second test session; sending the test message to the ingress NE to cause the ingress NE to transmit the outgoing message from the ingress NE; receiving the first reply message from the ingress NE; receiving the second reply message from the egress NE; and calculating an indication of a delay between the ingress NE and the egress NE.

Data path performance measurement using test messages in a software defined network

A method in a network controller of a control plane in a software defined network (SDN) coupled to a plurality of network elements (NEs) of a data plane in the SDN is described. The method includes sending a first control message having content including a first set of one or more classification rules to an ingress NE of the plurality of NEs; sending a second control message having content including a second set of one or more classification rules to an egress NE of the plurality of NEs; receiving the second notification message from the egress NE responsive to the selected data packet having been received by the ingress NE from an upstream NE and forwarded through the SDN from the ingress NE toward the egress NE; and calculating an indication of a delay of the selected data packet between the ingress NE and the egress NE.

Data path performance measurement using network traffic in a software defined network

A scheme for providing access to 6LoWPAN data in a wireless access network. In one embodiment, a Digital Unit (DU) of the wireless access network is provided with IP bridging functionality for packaging 6LO data as a control channel message. When the DU element receives 6LO data from an external router, the data is packaged in a format specified for a control channel associated with a CPRI link coupling to a Radio Unit (RU). The bridging functionality is operative to transmit the control channel message (including the packaged 6LO data packets) to the RU element based on an address mapping between the destination IP address of the 6LO data packets and an address of the 6LO endpoint coupled to the RU element.

A scheme for providing access to 6LoWPAN data in a wireless access network. In one embodiment, a Radio Unit (RU) of the access network is provided with IP bridging functionality for packaging 6LO data as a control channel message. When the RU element receives 6LO data from an external router, the data is packaged in a format specified for a control channel associated with an Ethernet cable link coupling the RU element to a 6LO endpoint of the access network. The bridging functionality is operative to transmit the control channel message (including the packaged 6LO data packets) to the 6LO endpoint based on an address mapping between the destination IP address of the 6LO data packets and the 6LO endpoint's address.

The method comprises receiving a message, extracting a network address of a second network node from said message, and storing said network address of said second network node. The method further comprises setting up a session for measuring network characteristics using said performance measuring protocol between said first network node and said second network node utilizing said network address.

Dynamic provisioning of TWAMP

A method performed in a network element for reacting to communication performance measurements that fall outside of communication performance thresholds. The network element generates a communication performance measurement between a first endpoint and a second endpoint, wherein each endpoint is a point of communication in the network and at least the first endpoint resides on the network element. The network element retrieves a communication performance threshold and determines whether the communication performance measurement falls outside of the communication performance threshold. The network element generates a trigger associated with the communication performance measurement and the communication performance threshold when it is determined that the communication performance measurement falls outside of the communication performance threshold. The network element retrieves a registered handler associated with the generated trigger to indicate that the registered handler requires execution in response to the generated trigger and executes the registered handler.
