Provided herein are compositions useful as detergents in cleaning a wide variety of substrates, including hard surfaces and laundry. The compositions contain a water-soluble polymer, which is a co-polymer between a polymerizable amide and a second, ethylenically-unsaturated monomer. The polymerizable amide itself is prepared from an amine-capped, alkoxylated alcohol by reaction with maleic acid anhydride. Compositions according to the invention show enhanced cleaning performance and beneficial anti-redeposition properties.

A consumer product packaged according to the present invention is one which exhibits birefringence, and the packaging used according to the present invention is arranged so that the consumer product is caused to exist between two layers of polarizing film and is thus capable of exhibiting the phenomenon of birefringence to consumers under ambient lighting conditions.

Display methods for liquids having optical effects

This invention is directed to a fluorine-containing mordenite catalyst and use thereof in the manufacture of alkylbenzene (LAB) by alkylation of benzene with an olefin. The olefin may have from about 10 to 14 carbons. The fluorine-containing mordenite is prepared typically by treatment with an aqueous hydrogen fluoride solution. The benzene alkylation may be conducted using reactive distillation. This invention is also directed to a process for production of LAB having a high 2-phenyl isomer content by use of the fluorine-containing mordenite in conjunction with a conventional solid LAB alkylation catalyst. The two catalysts may be used in a mixed catalyst bed or may be packed in series, with the relative proportions being adjusted to provide a desired 2-phenyl isomer content of in the final product.

Alkylbenzene detergents with high 2-isomer content

This invention is directed to detergent compositions which employ sulfonated alkyltoluenes as surfactants, wherein the sulfonated alkyltoluenes have a higher content of the sulfonated 2-phenyl alkyltoluenes isomers than was previously available in sulfonated alkyltoluene surfactants of the prior art. Cleaning compositions according to the invention are more effective as cleaning agents over their counterparts of prior art which contain sulfonated alkyltoluenes having lower contents of the 2-phenyl alkyltoluene isomers, owing to an unexpected increase in tolerance of water hardness minerals normally associated with precipitation of the active detergent agent. Solid sulfonate salts of alkyltoluenes are also provided, including dry cleaning formulations containing same. The alkyltoluenes of this invention may be combined with alkylbenzene surfactants in order to provide detergent blends having increased water hardness tolerance, lower Krafft temperature, and increased cleaning performance over what was previously afforded by the prior art.

This invention is directed to detergent compositions which employ sulfonated linear alkylbenzenes as surfactants, wherein the sulfonated linear alkylbenzenes have a higher content of the sulfonated 2-phenyl alkylbenzene isomers than was previously available in sulfonated phenyl alkylbenzene surfactants of the prior art. Surfactant adjuvants that improve the bioefficacy of herbicides by combining known surfactancy, or wetting characteristics, of sulfosuccinate or sulfosuccinamate-based surfactants, with the proven bioefficiacy characteristics of alkoxylated amine-based surfactants. The surfactant adjuvants contain an amine-based surfactant, and a sulfosuccinate or sulfosuccinamate-based surfactant. The surfactant adjuvants are combined with herbicidal active ingredients, and optionally, one or more formulation aids to form herbicide compositions that have a reduced tendency to cause eye and skin irritation and can be used to control unwanted weeds or vegetation.

Surfactants that are expected to further improve the bioefficacy of herbicides. The surfactants comprise esterified alkoxylated polyether diamines, alkoxylated polyether diamines, and mixtures thereof. The present invention also provides for herbicide compositions that contain the surfactants of the present invention. The herbicide compositions comprise a herbicidal active ingredient, a surfactant of the present invention, and optionally, one or more formulation aids. The present invention additionally provides for a method of controlling unwanted weeds or vegetation using the herbicide compositions of the present invention.

Polyether diamine&mdash;based surfactant adjuvants and compositions thereof

De-icing compositions, such as used on aircraft wing surfaces, are found to not need thickeners to obtain acceptable holdover times. The compositions are based on an alkylene glycol component (such as propylene glycol, diethylene glycol and mixtures thereof), and obtain particular advantage when a nonionic alkylphenol ethoxylate surfactant is used in conjunction with an alkylaryl sulfonate hydrotrope, as additives. This latter combination of additives gives de-icing compositions with increased holdover times with no degradation of other properties. These compositions exhibit a Newtonian rheology as required for de-icing compositions.

The invention is a method for generating bitumen-in-water dispersions and emulsions useful for recovering and transporting bitumen, which comprises mixing an aqueous surfactant solution with bitumen at an elevated temperature, said surfactant system comprising about 0.005% to about 5% by weight of a sulfonate surfactant represented by the formula ##STR1## wherein R is an alkyl chain of about 6 to about 16 carbon atoms, x has an average value of about 2 to about 10, y has an average value of about 1 to about 10, R' is ethylene, propylene or butylene, and M.sup.+ is an alkali metal or ammonium ion.

Generating bitumen-in-water dispersions and emulsions

Anti-icing compositions, such as used on aircraft wing surfaces, may be thickened using a blend of a polyacrylic acid and a copolymer of polyacrylic acid with a vinyl monomer, where the copolymer acts as a thickener modifier. Additional advantages are obtained when a low molecular weight nonionic alkylphenol ethoxylate surfactant is used in conjunction with an alkylaryl sulfonate hydrotrope, as additives. This latter combination of additives gives anti-icing compositions with increased holdover times with no degradation of other properties. The compositions also contain an alkylene glycol component, such as propylene glycol, diethylene glycol and mixtures thereof. These compositions retain a high viscosity, even when diluted with water, and exhibit a highly pseudoplastic rheology indicating desirable flow off characteristics.

Injection of steam or other thermal fluid for recovery of heavy crude oil is accompanied by or followed by injection in the same well of a solution of petrochemical sulfonate and a co-surfactant, the co-surfactant being either an olefin sulfonate or a propane sulfonate of an ethoxylated alcohol or alkyl phenol. The surfactant mixture is followed by injection in the same well of a water-soluble polymer solution and additional oil is recovered from production wells.

Hot water, surfactant, and polymer flooding process for heavy oil

The invention extracts surfactants from produced emulsions of oil, water and surfactants from enhanced oil recovery operations and concentrates the surfactants into an aqueous solution. The produced emulsion is mixed with an alkali metal chloride salt, and butanol or pentanol, and allowed to separate into two phases, an oleic phase and an aqueous phase. The oleic phase is then mixed with fresh water containing about 1% to about 10% by weight of isopropanol, ethanol or methanol, and the mixture is allowed to separate into at least two phases, a substantially water-free and surfactant-free crude oil phase and an aqueous phase containing virtually all of the enhanced oil recovery surfactants originally within the produced emulsion. The surfactants in the aqueous phase may be reutilized for further enhanced oil recovery operations.
