This disclosure describes techniques for creating a hybrid mesh of unlicensed wireless frequency bands between two or more vehicles communicating using an unlicensed wireless frequency band, and a massive MIMO base station communicating with the two or more vehicles using a licensed wireless frequency band. The hybrid mesh can be used to upload and download data from a vehicle in motion. The hybrid mesh can be formed via V2V connections between the vehicle and nearby vehicles. In other words, if a vehicle moves into a region outside the operating boundary of a 5G-NR massive MIMO base-station node, the vehicle can interact with other vehicles to generate a data pipeline using the unlicensed wireless frequency band from the vehicle the nearby vehicle, and using the licensed wireless frequency band from the nearby vehicle to the nearest, massive MIMO base station.

Hybrid mesh of licensed and unlicensed wireless frequency bands

Techniques for monitoring and configuring a mesh network are discussed herein. A centralized database may receive, from one or more access points that make up the mesh network, conditions data associated with the access points and the backhaul links between the access points. The centralized database may determine a radio frequency (RF) resource that should be used for the backhaul links to optimize the mesh network and send an instruction to the access point to operate using the RF resource.

Mesh network augmentation of cellular connections

Systems and techniques for keeping a mobile device up to date with respect to dynamic information necessary to identify and access the most suitable wireless network are disclosed. Such dynamic information includes device configuration update and wireless network selection policies update. Both device configuration data update and wireless network selection policies update includes wireless local area network (WLAN) automatic access parameters. The mobile device receives wireless network selection policies update whenever the mobile device changes location. At statically determined time slots, the mobile device receives device configuration update, followed by an additional wireless network selection policies update, which includes updated WLAN automatic access parameters.

The systems, devices, and methods discussed herein are directed to a portable communication device, or a user equipment (UE), for obtaining cellular network services with an unassociated cellular network with assistance from a wireless local area network (WLAN). Systems and methods for providing E911 services to a publicly-switched telephone network (PSTN) phone are described. In some embodiments, the systems and methods determine that the PSTN phone is connected to a voice over internet protocol (VoIP) adapter, identify an internet protocol (IP) address for an access point via which the adapter accesses an IP Multimedia System (IMS) network, determine a geographical location associated with the IP address, and enable E911 communications for the PSTN phone over the IMS network via the adapter based on the geographical location.

Techniques are disclosed for aggregating bandwidth from multiple sources. In embodiments, a user device, such as a cellular telephone, may have a communications channel established with both a cellular tower and a wireless access point (WAP). When the user device transmits data, this data transmission may be divided between the multiple communications channels concurrently, so as to utilize the combined bandwidth of the multiple channels. Each communication channel may be prioritized, such as by prioritizing using the cellular channel until it is at capacity, and then using the WAP channel.

A user device receives supplemental scheduling information that is generated based on telemetry data collected from multiple access points of a data network. The user device requests an access point of the data network for accessing the wireless local area network according to a wireless usage type. The wireless usage type is determined based on an application running on the user device and the supplemental scheduling information. The user device receives an allocation of time-frequency divisions for accessing the wireless local area network from the access point.

Systems and techniques that allow a mobile device to intelligently steer wireless data traffic among various wireless networks, including cellular networks and/or wireless local area networks (WLAN), is disclosed. The mobile device selects a wireless network to steer the data traffic by following a set of wireless network selection rules or policies. Such rules and policies may include rules for deciding whether to use WLAN, which WLAN hotspots to use, whose WLAN hotspot to use, etc. The policies or rules for steering wireless data traffic may be provided in accordance with Access Network Discovery and Selection Function (ANDSF), which is a framework for specifying and delivering access network selection policies to mobile devices. The network selection is based on (i) account information associated with the mobile device, (ii) network metrics measuring data processing capacity for at least one of the wireless networks, and (iii) location of the mobile device.

Intelligent network selection

Techniques are disclosed to increase security of a wireless access point (WAP). In embodiments, a cellular network provider has an arrangement with an owner of a WAP for cellular network customers to connect to the Internet through that WAP. The WAP may broadcast a SSID for cellular network customers only when a virtual private network (VPN) is established between the WAP and a server of the cellular network provider. If the VPN disconnects, then the WAP stops broadcasting this SSID until the VPN is re-established.
