A component for a vehicle interior may comprise a panel comprising a structure, and an airbag comprising a cushion for deployment through the panel. The airbag may be directly attached to the structure. The airbag may comprise a set of holes for attachment to the structure. The structure may comprise a set of posts for the set of holes. The structure may comprise an airbag chute. The component may comprise a cover coupled to the structure and an inflator coupled to the cover. The cover may clamp the airbag between the cover and the structure. The airbag may comprise at least one flap coupled between the cover and the structure. The cover may be staked to the structure. The structure may comprise a frame for attachment of the airbag and the cover to the structure. The component may comprise a trim component, instrument panel or door panel.

An airbag module assembly () has a module housing (). An airbag () and an airbag inflator () are positioned inside the module housing. The airbag inflator () has an exhaust port end () extending external of the module housing () for venting inflation gasses directly from the airbag inflator () externally of the module housing ().

An airbag inflator () for inflating an airbag has a tubular inflator housing () having a first end (A) and a second end (B). A gas release mechanism () has an exhaust port end or housing () at the first end (A) for releasing gas directly from the tubular inflator housing () to ambient air, bypassing the airbag. A heater assembly () containing a gas generant is located and attached at the second end (B). An igniter () ignites the heater assembly (). A primary gas vent port () vents gas from the tubular inflator housing () into an airbag during normal deployment of the airbag. The gas release mechanism () has a passageway or opening () for exhausting gas from the tubular inflator housing () to an exhaust port (). A seal () seals the passageway or opening () of the gas release mechanism (). An igniterfor opens the seal () thereby terminating or slowing deployment and normal inflation of the airbag through the primary vent port ().

Airbag inflator

An airbag module, in particular for a frontal airbag, has a housing with at least one housing recess and a housing opening. The airbag has at least one opening therein for receiving an inflator. The inflator can be arranged in the housing opening and the opening in the airbag and the housing recess. The opening in the airbag for receiving an inflator is reinforced by a reinforcing member, which extends essentially around the opening in the airbag for receiving an inflator. The reinforcing member can be deformed and restored, to be guided from the interior of the housing through the housing opening, so that the reinforcing member at least partly is adjacent to the exterior wall of the housing in the region of the housing opening.
