In an example embodiment the occurrence of the split-brain condition in a High-Availability system, having active and standby processing units, is detected, its cause is diagnosed, and the cause is treated to prevent interruption of service. Diagnosis and treatment procedures are performed at the active processing unit prior to being performed at the standby processing unit.

Detecting and preventing the split-brain condition in redundant processing units

A method of managing a network switch having a processor card, including a memory and a processing unit in the processor card is described. The method includes the steps of detecting an error and determining a type of the error. Then, determining whether a threshold has been reached and performing a hitless rebuild in the processor card when the type of the error is in a first set of errors and the threshold has not been reached.

Method and apparatus for performing the rebooting of a network node with minimal loss of network traffic

Components to be verified for compatibility are identified. Each of the components maintains a relationship with the other components such that all of the components are compatible with one another. A change to one component triggers an automatic evaluation of the relationships between the changed component and the other components to determine if compatibility is maintained. The automatic evaluation of the relationships is based on predetermined compatibility information provided in a compatibility matrix. When the automatic evaluation identifies incompatibility between the changed component and the other components, the change is rejected.
