An identifier based glyph search is described. In one or more embodiments, a search input is analyzed in a digital medium environment to generate search tokens and locate a font. The search tokens are compared to identifiers within the font, and corresponding identifiers are used to locate and retrieve particular glyphs from within the font. The retrieved glyphs are ordered and configured for output or display. The resulting glyph results include a variety of glyphs that are related to the search input, and may provide alternative related glyphs even where a user knows an exact identifier associated with a glyph. This technique may be iterated to accommodate changing search inputs and allows users to easily find desired glyphs with minimal effort and without the need for specialized knowledge regarding the identifiers of particular glyphs.

Various techniques more precisely and reliably (a) position top and bottom boundaries of a region of background shading, (b) position left and right boundaries of a region of background shading, (c) define a region of background shading that is applied to Chinese, Japanese, or Korean characters, and (d) apply a clipping path to achieve an arbitrarily-shaped region of background shading. These techniques allow background shading to be applied to textual content precisely and reliably, and also reduce the likelihood that unwanted visual artifacts are introduced into a digital publication.

Systems and methods provide for replacing a glyph in text displayed by an application with an alternate glyph. A glyph is selected, and the character and font of the glyph are identified. Alternate glyphs for the character in the font are then determined, and a visual indicator is displayed proximate to the glyph in the text to indicate availability of the alternate glyphs. In response to a user action associated with the glyph and/or visual indicator, the alternate glyphs are presented. A user can then select one of the alternate glyphs, and the original glyph in the text is replaced with the selected alternate glyph.

Techniques are disclosed for color selection in a desktop publishing application. A color selection technique includes receiving a selection of an image, automatically sampling a color from a pixel of the selected image, and adding the sampled color to a color swatch in a graphical user interface. The sampled color may be the predominant color in the image (e.g., the color that appears in the greatest number of pixels), or the sampled color may be the darkest or lightest color in the image. In another embodiment, several colors (e.g., two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine or ten) are sampled from different pixels of the selected image, and some or all of the sampled colors are added to the color swatch. A designer can then select the sampled color(s) from the color swatch and apply the selected color(s) to one or more elements of a layout.

Techniques are disclosed for replicating the appearance of typographical attributes and text adornments in digital publications. Content in a fixed layout format is converted into a standard digital publication format by applying a &#x3c;span&#x3e; tag to each word of the content. Each &#x3c;span&#x3e; tag includes a CSS letter spacing attribute that is calculated based on the effective width of each glyph forming the word in the fixed layout format, and the default width of the same glyph in the digital publication format. In this manner, the corresponding word is rendered in approximately the same space in both the fixed layout and digital publication formats.
