Human sebum mimetics and methods for producing human sebum mimetics are provided. In one exemplary embodiment, a human sebum mimetic comprises a wax ester derived from interesterification of a refined botanical triglyceride oil comprising palmitoleic acid and refined jojoba oil, a phytosterol, phytosqualene, and phytosteryl macadamiate. A method for producing a human sebum mimetic comprises mixing refined macadamia oil and refined jojoba oil, interesterifying the macadamia oil and the jojoba oil, adding a phytosterol, adding phytosteryl macadamiate, and adding phytosqualene after interesterification.

Human sebum mimetics derived from botanical sources and methods for making the same

Materials with high levels of unsaponifiable matter, such as extracts from plants, produce hydrolysates with unique properties. The application of a hydrolysis process to materials, particularly materials with a high level of unsaponifiables (e.g., at least 6 weight percent of the material), produces a product with properties significantly different from those products resulting from the conventional saponification of materials with less than 6 weight percent of unsaponifiables. The hydrolysates of the present invention are substantive, resisting both physical and aqueous-based removal from skin and hair, exhibit a unique surfactant property, and are not foaming agents with water. Hydrolysates according to the present invention may be used to enhance the performance of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. These hydrolysates can be bioactive agents and alternative natural carrying agents for topical application of materials, particularly for application of materials to the skin or hair, providing a substantive support for the materials carried.

High unsaponifiables and methods of using the same

Human sebum mimetics and methods for producing human sebum mimetics are provided. In one exemplary embodiment, a human sebum mimetic comprises a wax ester derived from interesterification of refined botanical oil comprising palmitoleic acid and refined jojoba oil, a phytosterol, and phytosqualene. Disclosed features and specifications may be variously controlled, adapted or otherwise optionally modified to improve substantivity and/or rinse-off characteristics. Exemplary embodiments of the present invention generally provide hair conditioners, shampoos, straighteners, permanent waves, color-fast dyes, non-color-fast dyes, and repair treatments with jojoba hydrolysates in combination with Quaternium 80 for increased substantivity and superior wash/rinse-off benefits.

Described is a method for improving the spreading properties of fatty alcohol containing cosmetic ingredients by providing a fatty alcohol containing starting material and adding an effective amount of acylating source [e.g., RC)&#x2550;O)OC(&#x2550;O)R, where Ris an alkyl substituent of the acyl group having between 1 and 5 carbons; where Ris a long chain fatty alkyl subsistent (non-limiting examples are unsaturated substituents such as CH&#x2014;(CH)&#x2014;CH&#x2550;CH&#x2014;CH&#x2014;(CH)&#x2014;, and saturated substituents such as CH&#x2014;(CH)&#x2014;, wherein x ranges from 4 to 12, and y ranges from 14 to 22, and the like)], wherein the spreading properties of the starting material are increased over the spreading properties originally exhibited.

Method for improving spreading properties of cosmetic ingredients

Compositions or fluids comprising esters of long-chain organic molecules derived from natural oils, particularly plant, bean, seed and nut oils can be provided with increased oxygen stability by their combination with mixtures of particular classes of antioxidants, particularly combinations of at least one tocopherol and a supplemental ingredient selected from the class consisting of kojic acid, malic acid and ascorbic acid. The stabilization combination is particularly effective in combination with esters of long-chain organic molecules having less than 20% methylene interrupted polyunsaturation. An emollient composition is described that comprises a long-chain ethyl ester in combination with an oxidation stabilizing systems comprising at least one tocopherol and at least one supplemental additive selected from the group consisting of kojic acid, malic acid, and ascorbic acid. The long-chain ethyl ester may comprise an ethyl ester of a natural oil. The long-chain ethyl ester may have a percent methylene interrupted unsaturation of less than 20%, less than 15%, less than 10%, or less than 5%. The emollient composition may have the at least one supplemental additive present in an amount of from 0.01 to 2% or more by weight of said long-chain ethyl ester and the tocopherol is present in an amount of from 0.01 to 5% by weight of said long-chain ethyl ester. The emollient composition preferably has the long-chain ethyl ester selected from the class consisting of ethyl ester of macadamia oil, ethyl ester of hybrid sunflower, ethyl ester of babassu oil and meadowfoam having a percentage methylene interrupted unsaturation of less than 5.
