A process for making a magnesium-containing supported titanium-containing, alpha-olefin polymerization or co-polymerization catalyst or catalyst component having a large particle size, semi-spherical particle shape and high resistance to attrition.

Olefin polymerization and copolymerization catalyst

A catalyst or catalyst component for the polymerization of copolymerization of alpha-olefins, which is formed by a process comprising forming a solution of a magnesium-containing species in a liquid comprising at least one alcohol.

A solid hydrocarbon-insoluble, alpha-olefin polymerization catalyst component with superior activity, stereospecificity and morphology characteristics comprises the product formed by (A) forming a solution of a magnesium-containing species from a magnesium carbonate or a magnesium carboxylate; (B) precipitating solid particles from such magnesium-containing solution by treatment with a transition metal halide and an organosilane; (C) reprecipitating such solid particles from a mixture containing a cyclic ether; and (D) treating the reprecipitated particles with a transition metal compound and an electron donor.

In a solid hydrocarbon-insoluble, alpha-olefin polymerization catalyst component with superior activity, stereospecificity and morphology characteristics comprising the product formed by (A) forming a solution of a magnesium-containing species from a magnesium alkyl (or hydrocarbyl) carbonate or a magnesium carboxylate; (B) precipitating solid particles from such magnesium-containing toluene-based solvent by treatment with a transition metal halide and an organosilane; (C) reprecipitating such solid particles from a mixture containing a cyclic either; and (D) treating the reprecipitated particles with a transition metal compound and an electron donor, the morphology of such component is modified by incorporating a morphology-affecting amount of C.sub.8 -C.sub.10 aromatics within the toluene-based solvent in Step B, Step A, in Step C prior to addition of ether, or combinations thereof.

Composition comprising a transition metal component and magnesium hydrocarbyl carbonate. Composition can be prepared by reacting suspension of magnesium alcoholate with carbon dioxide to form a magnesium hydrocarbyl carbonate and reacting magnesium hydrocarbyl carbonate with transition metal component. When the suspending liquid comprises an alcohol, the magnesium hydrocarbyl carbonate dissolves and is subsequently precipitated with an antisolvent comprising metal alkyl or transition metal halide. When the suspending liquid is substantially free of alcohol, the magnesium hydrocarbyl carbonate suspension is reacted with metal alkyl and transition metal compound.

A titanium-containing olefin polymerization catalyst component comprises a titanium-containing component formed by reducing titanium tetrachloride with an organoaluminum compound, optionally contacting the resulting reduced solid with a pretreatment amount of alpha-olefin monomer under polymerization conditions, and reacting the resulting product with a Lewis base complexing agent and a haloalkylchlorosilane.

Activation of complexed reduced titanium halide olefin polymerization

In a method to produce an alpha-olefin polymerization catalyst comprising reducing titanium tetrachloride with an aluminum alkyl, contacting the resulting reduced solid with a pretreatment amount of alpha-olefin monomer under polymerization conditions and reacting the resulting product with a Lewis base complexing agent and additional titanium tetrachloride, the improvement comprising reacting the Lewis base complexing agent in a molar ratio to the reduced titanium compound of greater than 1.15 to 1.

A novel catalyst and process for producing highly-crystalline polypropylene or pure block or terminal block types of copolymers of propylene and ethylene or propylene and another alpha-olefin in excellent yields which coproduce minor amounts of low-molecular-weight and, particularly, amorphous polymers. The catalyst comprises an aluminum alkyl compound, titanium trichloride, a sterically-hindered cyclic amine and an organotin sulfide. This novel catalyst and process are useful in polymerization techniques which use a polymerization medium or those in which the condensed monomer is polymerized from the liquid phase or those in which polymerization is accomplished from monomer substantially in the vapor phase.
