A component-in-process comprises an ultra-thin foil shadow mask having on at least one side thereof a lamina having a composition and thickness effective to physically support and protect the mask during subsequent processing operations. Such operations include forming apertures in a foil mask blank mounted on a lamina, electroforming a foil mask on a lamina, and etching a mask mounted on a lamina to reduce overall thickness or selectively thin it.

A system for recognizing touch positions along a predetermined coordinate axis on a surface of a touch panel display apparatus comprises a substrate having a surface capable of propagating surface acoustic waves and is so characterized that a touch on that surface causes amplitude damping of a surface wave passing through the region of touch. An input surface wave transducer, coupled to the substrate surface launches a burst of surface waves on the surface in a first direction parallel to the aforesaid axis. An output surface wave transducer is also coupled to the substrate. A first surface wave reflecting means derives wave components from the launched wave and reflects them across the display surface to a second wave reflecting means that redirects the reflected components in a second direction opposite to the aforesaid first direction. The first and second reflecting means causes wave components to traverse the display surface orthogonally to the coordinate axis along a progression of paths associated with different positions along the coordinate axis. Circuit means coupled to the input and output transducers initiate surface wave bursts across the surface as well as detect touch-induced damping of the received waves. The circuit means further includes means for developing an electrical signal representative of the time occurrence of the damping and thus an indication of which of the plurality of paths was traversed by the touch-damped wave and thereby the location of the touch on the display surface. The first and second wave reflecting means are silk-screened onto the surface, and comprise a baked frit material containing a refractory nucleation-accelerating agent.

A front assembly for a color cathode ray tube is disclosed. The tube includes a faceplate having on its inner surface a centrally disposed phosphor screen. A shadow mask support structure is resting on and secured to the inner surface of the faceplate on opposed sides of the screen. A foil shadow mask is secured to the structure under high inward tension. The shadow mask support structure according to the invention is characterized by having at least one foot resting on the inner surface for bracing and stabilizing the structure against upset from the high tension of the mask. Other embodiments of the invention are shown in which one or more of the feet have a plurality of open-ended or closed-ended openings therein for facilitating passage of the cement used for attaching the support structure to the inner surface of the faceplate. The openings according to the invention present cement-contactible edges for enhancing the securement of the support structure.

This disclosure depicts a new low cost color photographic film assembly which is of the additive type but is of very high speed due to its extremely efficient utilization of available exposure light. The assembly includes a photosensitive layer actinic to light in the entire visible bandwidth of the exposure light for recording intensity variations in light incident thereon. It includes a spectral separation phase structure comprising a pattern of periodically repetitive, wavelength-sensitive phase elements effective to deflect incident light of predetermined different colors in different directions. The phase structure is supported adjacent to the photosensitive layer and spaced therefrom by a prescribed distance which is such that each element of an image formed on the assembly is analyzed into a number of color separation elements segregated on the photosensitive layer. The image is recorded in the layer as a dissected composite of interleaved color separation elements. In a preferred arrangement the spectral separation phase structure comprises at least two interlaced sets of periodically repetitive phase elements which are characterized by their unique capability of causing light of light of the same color to be recorded in substantially coincident relationship in the photosensitive layer whereby the available film area is shared and the light utilization efficiency of the assembly thereby greatly enhanced.

This disclosure sets forth a process for electrophoretically depositing patterns of image-related compounds on the inner surface of the faceplate of shadow-mask-type television cathode ray picture tubes. The process comprises the depositing of a pattern of groups of periodically repeating electrically conductive stripes of predetermined graduated length from relatively long to relatively short. Both ends of stripes of similar length, starting with the relatively long stripes, are electrically excited with a charge of a first polarity by means of conductive contact strips during immersion in an electrolytic bath including an image-related compound having particles charged with a potential opposite in polarity to said first polarity for electrophoretic deposition of the particles on the stripes. Both ends of stripes of successively shorter lengths are than serially electrically excited in conjunction with a different bath including a different image-related compound for electrodeposition on the respective stripes. By electrically contacting both ends of the stripes, the effect of a single discontinuity in the electrical conductivity of any of the stripes is nullified, as any stripe having such a discontinuity is electrophoretically coated along its entire length.

This disclosure depicts a color television picture tube having an evacuated envelope, an electron gun, a color selection electrode defining a pattern of electron beam passing apertures and a multi-color image screen. The image screen has a corresponding pattern of triads of red-light-emissive, blue-light-emissive and green-light-emissive phosphor elements. The elements are spaced each from one another by a light absorbing material. The tube is characterized by having within at least selected triads in said pattern of triads a first phosphor element and associated electron beam landing area with either a positive or negative tolerance condition. The remaining two phosphor elements and associated beam landing areas have an opposite tolerance condition to that obtained for the first phosphor element.

A shadow mask for use in a color cathode ray tube to insure that a given electron beam impinges only on a given portion of the cathode ray tube screen. The mask comprises a webbing or sheet of relatively thin, electrically conductive material which defines a mask plane and which has therein a periodic array of electron transmissive apertures. The sheet includes a periodic array of ribs and/or dimples extending out of the plane of the mask to impart substantial rigidity to the mask.
