Multi-layer films that are suitable for packaging and having improved sealing properties are disclosed. Some embodiments may also provide a lower minimum sealing temperature. A soft polymer is blended in a core layer and a tie layer comprising the soft polymer and, optionally, another polymer. A sealable layer is provided on the side of the tie layer opposite the core layer. The multi-layer films may be transparent, contain a cavitating agent, or are pigmented to form an opaque film. Also, the multi-layer film may be metallized or coated with a barrier coating.

Multi-layer films having improved sealing properties

A metallized, multilayer film suitable for packaging applications is provided which comprises a first skin layer comprising a thermoplastic selected from the group consisting of high density polyethylene, ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer, medium density polyethylene, linear low density polyethylene, ethylene-propylene-butylene terpolymer, propylene-butylene copolymer, and amorphous polyamide, a metallized layer adjacent to the first skin layer, and a core layer comprising high crystallinity polypropylene homopolymer with an intermolecular stereoregularity greater than 93%. Additionally, low density polyethylene, EMA, EVA, or EAA may be extrusion laminated to the metallized side of the metallized, multilayer film at a web tension sufficient to prevent metal crazing of the vacuum deposited aluminum layer. A method for making the film is also provided.

Metallized multilayer film

An embossed, cast polyolefin film or an embossed, oriented polyolefin film includes: (a) a core layer including a propylene polymer; (b) an embossed outer layer on one side of the core layer, the embossed outer layer including an olefin polymer capable of being embossed; and (c) an additional outer layer on a side of the core layer opposite to the embossed outer layer, the additional outer layer including an olefin polymer. The embossed film can then be metallized to produce a shiny, metallic film having a prismatic or holographic appearance.

An embossed, cast polyolefin film or an embossed, oriented polyolefin film comprises: (a) a core layer comprising a propylene polymer; (b) an embossed outer layer on one side of the core layer, the embossed outer layer comprising an olefin polymer capable of being embossed; and (c) an additional outer layer on a side of the core layer opposite to the embossed outer layer, the additional outer layer comprising an olefin polymer. The embossed film can then be metallized to produce a shiny, metallic film having a prismatic or holographic appearance.

A uniaxially heat-shrinkable, biaxially oriented, multilayer film having a polypropylene-containing core layer containing at least 70 wt. % of the multilayer film and at least one polyolefin-containing skin layer adjacent the core layer is prepared by biaxially orienting a coextrudate and thereafter orienting the coextrudate by stretching 10 to 40% in the machine direction. The core layer contains isotactic polypropylene, a modifier which reduces the crystallinity of the polypropylene-containing core layer and a nucleating agent. Such modifiers include atactic polypropylene, syndiotactic polypropylene, ethylene-propylene copolymer, propylene-butene-1 copolymer, ethylene-propylene-butene-1 terpolymer, and linear low density polyethylene. The nucleating agent improves long term dimensional stability. The skin layer can be high density polyethylene on both sides or high density polyethylene on one side and isotactic polypropylene on the other side.

Uniaxially shrinkable biaxially oriented polypropylene film

A uniaxially heat-shrinkable, biaxially oriented, multilayer film having a polypropylene-containing core layer comprising at least 70 wt. % of said multilayer film and optionally, at least one polyolefin-containing skin layer adjacent said core layer, is prepared by biaxially orienting a coextrudate and therefore orienting said coextrudate by stretching 10 to 40 % in the machine direction. The core layer contains isotactic polypropylene and a sufficient amount of syndiotactic polypropylene to inhibit uniaxial heat shrinkage at temperature below about 50.degree. C. The skin layer can be selected from the group consisting of polypropylene, ethylene-propylene copolymer, polyethylene, and ethylene-propylene-butylene terpolymer.

Composition for uniaxially heat shrinkable biaxially oriented

The present invention relates to an opaque, biaxially oriented polymeric film having a thermoplastic polymer matrix material within which is located a stratum of voids. The voids are formed during orientation by a cavitating agent which is a particle of a cyclic olefinic copolymer. The solid particle is phase-distinct and incompatible with the matrix material.
