A composition comprising at least one binder coated with at least one metallate additive according to formula 1: (RO)-M-(O—XR'—Y)(formula 1), wherein M is one of titanium and zirconium. The composition is particularly useful in producing treated binders and construction materials, wherein the resulting treated binders and construction materials have advantageous properties, such as increased strength. Also disclosed are methods of preparing the inventive composition, treated binders and construction materials.

Construction materials, compositions and methods of making same

A composition comprising at least one binder coated with at least one metallate additive according to formula 1: (RO)-M-(O&#x2dc;X&#x2dc;R'&#x2dc;Y)(formula 1), wherein M is one of titanium and zirconium. The composition is particularly useful in producing treated binders and construction materials, wherein the resulting treated binders and construction materials have advantageous properties, such as increased strength. Also disclosed are methods of preparing the inventive composition, treated binders and construction materials.

The present invention relates to construction materials comprising at least one binder, at least one oil-containing filler and at least one metallate additive according to formula (1):(RO)-M-(O&#x2014;X&#x2014;R'&#x2014;Y)&#x2003;&#x2003;(1)wherein M is one of titanium and zirconium. The present invention also relates to methods of preparing and using the inventive construction materials. The inventive construction material compositions are capable of utilizing oil-containing fillers in which the oil is stable in the final composition and the desired mechanical properties of the construction material are maintained or improved.

Construction materials and compositions from oil-containing filler

The instant invention relates to the use of certain selected neoalkoxy organo-titanates and organo-zirconates in energetic compositions to improve their processability, physical properties, and combustion properties. The organo-titanates and organo-zirconates of the instant invention, when added to the energetic systems' matrix in advance of the introduction of particulate or other solid energetic components, improve the dispersion of the latter while reducing the energy required to achieve formulation uniformity. This enhances the processability, the physical properties, the burn characteristics and the safety and handling characteristics of the formulated composites.

Enhanced energetic composites

Liquid elastomer-based propellant having incorporated therein organo-titanate compounds are described. The organo-titanates have positive ballistic and physical effects on the propellants, serving to reduce burn rate exponents and overall burn rates, as well as increasing the tensile strength and elasticity of the propellant. Organo-phosphate and pyrophosphate titanates are used as the preferred organo-titanates.

A process for rendering polymer compositions antistatic and the products of such process are described. The polymeric material is treated with a combination of selected trineoalkoxy amino zirconates and trineoalkoxy sulfonyl zirconates. These latter materials are soluble in the polyolefins, polyesters, polyamides, polyethers, polycarbonates, and polystyrenes and remain stable during the processing of these polymers. Furthermore, the antistatic agents of the invention are thermally stable to temperatures up to 825.degree. F., do not 'bloom' during the polymer processing, and are colorless, permanent, non-blooming and non-moisture dependent.

Thermally stable antistatic agents

Halocarbons are readily bonded to a variety of substrates, including metals, polyolefins, styrenics, polyamides and thermoplastic polyesters, by treating the surface(s) to be bonded with a neoalkoxy zirconate compound. The articles produced by the aforesaid process resist delamination. Applicable fluorinated compounds include fluorinated polymers such as Teflon. The specific zirconate compound preferred is dependent on the particular substrate and the halogenated organic compound to be bonded. Preferred are organo-zirconates having the formula: ##STR1## wherein R, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each monovalent hydrocarbon groups or substantive derivatives thereof; the A groups are independently selected from diester phosphates, diester pyrophosphates, oxyalkylamino, oxyalkylarylamino, or sulfonyl groups; B is an R'.sub.2 C group or a carbonyl group; R' is a hydrogen group or an alkyl group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms; and n is 1 or 2.

Bonding of halogenated organic compounds

Halocarbons are readily bonded to a variety of substrates, including metals, polyolefins, styrenics, polyamides and thermoplastic polyesters, by treating the surface(s) to be bonded with a neoalkoxy zirconate compound. The articles produced by the aforesaid process resist delamination. Applicable fluorinated compounds include fluorinated polymers such as Teflon. The specific zirconate compound preferred is dependent on the particular substrate and the halogenated organic compound to be bonded. Preferred are organo-zirconates having one of the following formulas: ##STR1## wherein R, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each monovalent hydrocarbon groups or substantive derivatives thereof; the A groups are independently selected from diester phosphates, diester pyrophosphates, oxyalkylamino, oxyalkylarylamino, or sulfonyl groups; B is an R'.sub.2 C group or a carbonyl group; R' is a hydrogen group or an alkyl group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms; and n is 1 or 2.

A process for rendering polymer compositions antistatic and the products of such process are described. The polymeric material is treated with selected amino and sulfonyl titanates and zirconates. These latter materials are soluble in the polyolefins, polyesters and polystyrenes and remain stable during the processing of these polymers. Furthermore, the antistatic agents of the invention do not 'bloom' during the polymer processing.

Non-blooming antistatic agents

Polymeric materials are repolymerized by intensely admixing the polymer with an additive having the formula: ##STR1## wherein M is titanium or zirconium, R, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each a monovalent alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aralkyl, aryl or alkaryl group having up to 20 carbon atoms or a halogen or ether substituted derivative thereof, and, in addition, R.sup.2 may also be an oxy derivative or an ether substituted oxy derivative of said groups; A, B, and C are each a monovalent aroxy, thioaroxy, diester phosphate, diester pyrophosphate, oxyalkylamino, sulfonyl or carboxyl containing up to 30 carbon atoms; and a+b+c=3. The repolymerized polymers have improved physical properties and higher heat distortion temperatures, experience less thermal degradation and show greater solvolysis resistance than the polymers prior to the repolymerization.

Repolymerization

The invention relates to a new process for producing titanium IV and zirconium IV pyrophosphates, certain of which are new compounds, and their uses. The pyrophosphates are prepared by reacting a metal tetraester with phosphorus pentoxide, with or without the addition of an hydroxyl compound, such as an alcohol or a phenol. Depending on the molar ratio of the components, the compounds produced may contain cyclic or straight chain pyrophosphate groups and alkoxy groups attached to the metallic ion. In addition to forming new compounds, the process of the invention produces the desired products without difficult-to-separate by-products. The products of the invention are useful as flame-retardants, antioxidants, coupling agents, impact modifiers and processing aids, and the reaction for their preparation may be represented as follows: ##EQU1## wherein M is titanium or zirconium; R is a monovalent hydrocarbon group optionally substituted with halogen or oxygen substituents; n is an integer from 1 to 4; m is an integer from 0 to 4; x is an integer from 0 to 3, and p is an integer from 0 to 2; q is an integer from 0 to 4; n is greater than or equal to m; n=p+m+q; x+m+2p+q=4; and when x is greater than 0, q is 0.
