A surgical system including a cartridge having a first tissue sealing electrode and a surgical instrument including a first jaw and a second jaw, wherein the first jaw comprises a second tissue sealing electrode facing the second jaw, and wherein the second jaw is configured to removably receive the cartridge in a position where the first tissue sealing electrode is opposite the second tissue sealing electrode. The surgical system further includes a cut and seal controller, wherein the cut and seal controller automatically generates a command to the surgical instrument to reduce a clamping force between the first and the second jaws after sensing that tissue sealing is complete.

Cut and seal instrument

Implementations relate to a master control device and methods for using such a control device. In some implementations, a master control device includes a control body including a surface. A force sensor is coupled to the control body, the force sensor configured to sense forces applied to the surface of the control body and provide sensor signals in accordance with amounts of the forces received on sides of the control body caused by a pinching of the control body between fingers of a user. At least one sensor is configured to detect at least one of a position and an orientation of the control body in a working environment of the control body.

Master control device with finger grip sensing and methods therefor

A medical device may comprise an instrument comprising a shaft and a working end comprising a jaw mechanism, and a translating mechanism moveable in a first direction and a second direction relative to the jaw mechanism, the first and second directions opposite to one another. The medical device may further comprise a controller configured to in response to a first input, control movement of the translating mechanism from a proximal position to an intermediate position relative to the jaw mechanism, in response to a second input, control movement of the translating mechanism from the intermediate position to a distal position relative to the jaw mechanism, control movement of the translating mechanism from the distal position back to the proximal position, and monitor a position of the translating mechanism to determine whether the translating mechanism has moved from the distal position back to the proximal position after a predetermined time period.

Surgical instrument control

A method for a minimally invasive surgical system is disclosed including capturing camera images of a surgical site; generating a graphical user interface (GUI) including a first colored border portion in a first side and a second colored border in a second side opposite the first side; and overlaying the GUI onto the captured camera images of the surgical site for display on a display device of a surgeon console. The GUI provides information to a user regarding the first electrosurgical tool and the second tool in the surgical site that is concurrently displayed by the captured camera images. The first colored border portion in the GUI indicates that the first electrosurgical tool is controlled by a first master grip of the surgeon console and the second colored border portion indicates the tool type of the second tool controlled by a second master grip of the surgeon console.

Methods of user interfaces for electrosurgical tools in robotic surgical systems

A medical device can include a working end comprising a jaw mechanism configured to perform a clamping function and a translating cutting mechanism configured to perform a cutting function in response to translating movement of the translating cutting mechanism. The medical device can further include at least two user-actuated input mechanisms, and a computer processor operably coupled to the working end and to the at least two user-actuated control input mechanisms. In an operational state, the computer processor commands a movement of the translating cutting mechanism through a first range of motion in response to a first command received from actuation of a first of the at least two user-actuated control input mechanisms, and commands a movement of the translating cutting mechanism through a second range of motion in response to at least a second command received from actuation of at least a second of the at least two user-actuated control input mechanisms, the second range of motion being different from the first range of motion.

A computer-controlled surgical system may include a surgical instrument having a working end, the working end having a moveable mechanical component, and movement of the mechanical component performing a clamping and cutting function by the working end. The surgical system may further include a computer control system operably coupled to the surgical instrument and to first and second input devices. In response to a first command received from the first input device, the computer control system controls movement of the mechanical component within a first range of motion, and in response to a second command received from the second input device, the computer control system controls movement of the mechanical component within a second range of motion different from the first range of motion.

Surgical system with user interfaces for electrosurgical tools

In one embodiment of the invention, a robotic surgical system is provided including a master control console and a surgical manipulator. The master control console generates control signals to cause one or more fluids to flow into or out of a surgical site. The surgical manipulator is coupled to the console to receive the control signals and includes at least one robotic arm and a surgical instrument coupled thereto. The surgical manipulator controls the surgical instrument in response to the control signals to control the flow of the one or more fluids into or out of the surgical site. The surgical instrument has a first robotically controlled valve that is responsive to the surgical manipulator and a hollow tube having a first end coupled to the first robotically controlled valve with an opening at a second end to direct the flow of one or more fluids.

Robotic surgical systems with fluid flow control for irrigation, aspiration, and blowing

In a surgical instrument, a reciprocating element controls jaw opening and closing as it moves over a first range of motion and cuts tissue clamped between the jaws as it moves over a second range of motion. A first control input controls the reciprocating element's motion over the first range of motion, and a second control input controls the reciprocating element's motion over the second range of motion. As a result, over control by the first control input will not result in inadvertent tissue cutting.

A combined electrical tissue sealing and mechanical tissue cutting instrument. The instrument has two opposing jaw members. A removable cartridge is positioned in one of the jaw members. The cartridge includes a tissue sealing electrode and a tissue cutter. As either the tissue sealing electrode or the cutter deteriorates with use, the cartridge is replaced with a new cartridge. Cartridges are configured with various electrode geometries to accommodate various associated electro-surgical units. One or more pressure sensors in the cartridge or in the instrument jaw that supports the cartridge provide an indication that a required clamping pressure exists between the jaw members to carry out the tissue sealing. A cut and seal controller allows various actions to be carried out when particular clamping pressures are sensed, or when an indication that tissue sealing is complete is sensed.

User interfaces for electrosurgical tools in robotic surgical systems

A control console to remotely control medical equipment is disclosed having a base with an ergonomically adjustable pedal system. The base further has an opening to receive the pedal system. The pedal system includes a moveable pedal tray with a pedal base. The tray includes a first left pedal assembly and a first right pedal assembly, and an upper tier having a second left pedal assembly and a second right pedal assembly respectively in alignment with and elevated above the first left pedal assembly and the first right pedal assembly. Rollers are rotatable coupled to the moveable pedal tray to allow it roll over a floor. A drive assembly is coupled between the moveable pedal tray and the base. The drive assembly applies a force to the to roll the moveable pedal tray over the floor within the opening of the base.
