Compositions useful for the flame retardant finishing of cotton articles or other cellulose materials are described. The compositions are obtainable by reacting a tetrakishydroxyalkylphosphonium (THP) salt with caprolactam and urea to form a condensation product and subsequently forming a condensate from excess THP salt and excess urea. The compositions endow cotton articles with flame retardant properties and a pleasantly soft hand coupled with good durability to laundering processes.

Compositions are described that are obtainable by preparing a mixture of methanephosphonic acid, boric acid, water and optionally urea and subsequently adding dicyandiamide and/or guanylurea to this mixture. The permanence of the flame-resistant finish of fibre materials, in particular those based on cellulose, is improved if a phosphono compound which contains an N-methylol group. is used together with an organic carboxylic acid as the finishing agent. If oxalic acid in particular is used as the carboxylic acid, the finished fibre material can be stored in a damp environment for a prolonged period of time without intermediate washing being necessary. The tendency of the finish to hydrolyse in a damp atmosphere is reduced by using the organic carboxylic acid instead of a mineral acid.
