A flexible auger design for low-torque transmitting drive shafts, which allows effective tissue material transport through curved, flexible tubes and channels. A hollow auger has a hollow center, so that the helical member hugs the inner wall of the tube and material is transported along the center axis and the inner wall of the tube. The hollow flexible auger allows for transportation of material from an operative location in the patient (material removal) as well as to operative location in the patient (material delivery).

The present invention is directed to material removal instrument for forming cavities in interior body regions, particularly cavities in intervertebral discs and vertebrae. The instrument includes a cannula and a rotation mechanism disposed at least partially within the cannula. A cutting element extends from the rotation mechanism and impacts and dislocates tissue as the rotation mechanism is rotated within the body. Dislocated tissue with withdrawn from the body via the cannula.

The present invention is directed at minimally invasive systems in which the proximal end portion of the working channel has either zero or a limited range of movement in the lateral direction. A first embodiment has a slidable collar attached to a pair of flanges, wherein movement of the collar is bounded by an annular frame. The apparatus including an expandable membrane sized and configured to be located within a cavity in a patient's bone and having an interior volume for receiving bone filler material; a delivery cannula in communication with the membrane for providing bone filler material to the membrane; and an evacuation cannula in fluid communication with the membrane for receiving a portion of the provided bone filler material from the membrane.

A device for assisting in the positioning and sizing of an implant includes an elongate member and a block. The elongate member has length indicia at axial locations along a length for measuring a first distance from a predetermined datum of the elongate member. The block is attached to and movable along the elongate member. The block includes width indicia for measuring a second distance in a direction transverse to the first distance. A method for assisting in the positioning and sizing of an implant includes moving the elongate member along the block to axial locations along such member to determine an appropriate width and depth of insertion of the implant.
