A method for making a partially crystalline, biaxially oriented heat set hollow polyethylene terephthalate free standing container from a hollow parison having an open end and a closed end including engaging the open end of a plastic parison which is at a temperature within its molecular orientation temperature range, positioning a mold base in axial alignment with said engaged hot parison, enclosing a hot mold about the mold base, the mold being at heat setting temperature and the mold base being at a temperature preferably significantly lower than the mold, expanding the plastic parison within the hot mold and mold base by internal pressurization to induce biaxial orientation of the plastic parison and force the plastic parison into intimate contact and conformance with the hot mold and to maintain contact by such internal pressurization between the mold and mold base and the biaxially oriented container for a time sufficient to induce partial crystallization in the side wall and base of the biaxially oriented container, reducing the internal pressure in the blown container, opening the hot mold while maintaining engagement of the open end of the blown hollow container, disengaging the hot mold base from the blown container, maintaining a lower internal pressurization of the container to prevent significant shrinkage, and engaging a cold mold base with the base of the container, and enclosing a cold mold about the container and the mold base to cool the container while maintaining engagement of the open end with the container and maintaining pressure in the container at least sufficient to prevent shrinkage, and opening the cold mold and releasing the container.

Method of making partially crystalline biaxially oriented hollow plastic

A method for making a partially crystalline, biaxially oriented heat set hollow plastic container from a hollow parison having an open end and a closed end comprising engaging the open end of a plastic parison which is at a temperature within its molecular orientation temperature range, positioning a mold base in axial alignment with said engaged hot parison, enclosing a hot mold about the mold base, the mold being at heat setting temperature, expanding the plastic parison within the hot mold and mold base by internal pressurization to induce biaxial orientation of the plastic parison and force the plastic parison into intimate contact and conformance with the hot mold and to maintain contact by such internal pressurization between the mold and the biaxially oriented container for a time sufficient to induce partial crystallization in the biaxially oriented container, lowering the internal pressure in the container, opening the hot mold while maintaining engagement of the open end and engagement of the mold base with the blown hollow container, maintaining a lower internal pressurization of the container to prevent significant shrinkage, and cooling the container while maintaining engagement of the open end and engagement of the mold base with the container and maintaining pressure in the container at least sufficient to prevent shrinkage.

A multilayer polyethylene structure is disclosed, which is a laminate of at least two layers of high density polyethylene. In one embodiment, a first layer is high density polyethylene of a density of at least 0.959 grams per cubic centimeter and a melt index of about ten grams per ten minutes or less and is about 80 weight percent of the structure. A second layer of the laminate is high density polyethylene of a density to or less than 0.959 grams per cubic centimeter and a melt index of about ten grams per ten minutes or less and is about 20 weight percent of the structure.

Degradable polymer composition

A high barrier heatset intimate fusion blend article is disclosed where the article includes a blend of a high barrier copolyester, formed from terephthalic acid, ethylene glycol and 1,3 bis(2-hydroxyethoxy) benzene, and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). The PET/copolyester blend articles are formed using a blowmolding and heatsetting process to rapidly achieve a high percentage of crystallinity of the PET in the article. The articles have excellent gas barrier and mechanical strength properties, high thermal stability and remain optically clear after heatsetting.

Heatset high barrier container

A hollow transparent delamination resistant heatset multilayer article is disclosed where the article includes at least one barrier layer containing a copolyester formed from terephthalic acid, ethylene glycol and 1,3 bis(2-hydroxyethoxy) benzene directly adhered to at least one layer containing poly(ethylene) terephthalate (PET). The multilayer articles are blowmolded using a heatsetting process. The heatset multilayer articles retain high gas barrier properties, uniform thickness in layers, and desirable mechanical strength properties even after the heatsetting process. Also, the multilayer heatset articles have excellent interlayer adhesion without the need for an adhesive layer, high thermal stability, and remain optically clear after the heatsetting process.

Heatset multilayer container

A group of degradable polymer compositions including admixtures of ethylene-carbon monoxide copolymer with defined proportions of high density polyethylene, linear low density polyethylene or polypropylene is disclosed. The compositions are useful for forming article carriers, containers, closures, foodtrays and the like, which show excellent mechanical and structural properties and controlled environmental degradability.

Degradable polymer composition and articles prepared from same

A multilayer high gas barrier plastic article wherein the article comprises a laminate including at least one layer of a high gas barrier polymer and at least one layer composed of an intimate blend of a propylene based polymer and an amount of linear low density polyethylene wherein said linear low density polyethylene is up to thirty weight percent or less of the blend. The multilayer high gas barrier article incorporating the intimate blend in conjunction with a high gas barrier polymer layer has good gas barrier characteristics, good mechanical properties and excellent low temperature drop impact characteristics, particularly when fabricated into free-standing bottles.

Multilayer plastic articles

Improved plastic containers and process for their production are disclosed. In one embodiment, containers are blow molded in a first hot blow mold, then reblown to a larger size in a second cold mold of larger volume than the first hot mold. Such containers have improved physical properties, particularly very high hoop yield stresses. In a second embodiment, containers are blow molded in a hot blow mold, then reblown to a larger size in a second hot blow mold. Such containers show high resistance to shrinkage and gross deformation in shape upon exposure to high temperatures.

Poly(ethylene terephthalate) articles

A polyester or copolyester container is made with a heat activated high barrier copolyester label applied to the container sidewall. The process for producing the high barrier container that is a hollow polyester or copolyester body with a barrier label effectively applied to its outer sidewall, includes forming the container by an extrusion blow method, injection blow method, orientation-blow method, or orientation blow-heat set method and applying the barrier label via an 'in-mold' technique utilizing a heat-activatable high barrier copolyester resin as the adhesive.

Process for applying copolyester barrier layer on polyester container

Disclosed is a process of making an oriented and heat set thermoformed hollow article of poly(ethylene terephthalate) so that the sidewalls of the articles resulting from the process have a density over 1.391 cc./gm. and an onset-of-shrinkage temperature over 105.degree. C. In the process, a sheet preheated to a temperature suitable for orientation is biaxially stretch thermoformed and then while the hollow article walls are still in contact with the mold walls, the article is raised to a higher heat setting temperature in the range of about 220-250.degree. C. thus heat setting the article, and while the article is still under restraint resisting shrinkage, quenching the sidewalls of the article to a temperature that will provide a shrinkage of less than about 5% by volume and the above onset-of-shrinkage temperature of at least about 105.degree. C.

Method of making poly(ethylene terephthalate) articles

Polymer blends are disclosed which contain 75-90 weight % of a linear high-density ethylene polymer (density at least 0.94 gm/ml, melt index less than 0.5 gm/10 min) and 10-25 weight % of a linear low-density ethylene polymer (density less than 0.93 gm/ml, melt index less than 2.0 gms/10 min). The blends have a combination of physical properties and environmental stress crack resistance which make them well-suited for conversion to blow-molded containers for use in packaging aqueous detergent compositions.

Ethylene polymer blend and containers prepared therefrom

A polyester based intimate fusion blended composition comprising an admixture of a poly(ethylene terephthalate) and a copolyester of isophthalic and terephthalic acid, ethylene glycol and 1,3 bis(2-hydroxyethoxy)benzene is disclosed. The novel material disclosed is suitable for fabrication into container parison, hollow containers, sheet stock and film. Such articles exhibit excellent gas barrier properties, mechanical strength and processability.
