A composition for backing a carpet, which contains (a) 5 to 65% by weight of an olefin-polar monomer copolymer having a polar monomer content of 5 to 40% by weight, (b) 1 to 50% by weight of a synthetic oil comprising one or more non-condensed tricyclic aromatic hydrocarbon compounds having a boiling point of 250.degree. C. or higher and a molecular weight of 258 to 482, and being liquid at room temperature, (c) 30 to 90% by weight of an inorganic filler, and, if necessary, up to 50% by weight of a solid low-molecular compound component. The composition is particularly useful for automobile carpets and carpet tiles. The composition provides flexibility during blending, a high flexibility, and, in particular, a superior performance at low temperatures.

Composition for backing carpets

A method of making a carpet tile in which a carpet fed from a carpet feed section, a thermoplastic backing composition layer, and a secondary backing fabric fed from a secondary backing fabric feed section are laminated to form a carpet belt material, and the carpet belt material is cooled and cut to size. In the aforesaid method, the carpet is passed through a roll guider, and the secondary backing fabric is passed through a cloth guider, and, if required, through an expander roll. In the aforesaid methods, the secondary backing fabric is further preheated.

Method of making a carpet tile

A process for preparing a hydrogenated hydrocarbon resin is provided which comprises the steps of: (A) polymerizing 100 parts by weight of a hydrocarbon mixture containing fractions of cracked oils obtained by cracking of petroleum and having boiling points ranging within from 140.degree. to 280.degree. C., said polymerization being effected in the presence of 0.1 to 3.0 parts by weight of a phenol and 0.01 to 5.0 parts by weight of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst at - (minus) 30.degree. C. to + (plus) 60.degree. C. to obtain a polymerized hydrocarbon mixture; (B) adding 0.1 to 20 parts by weight of a basic substance to 100 parts by weight of said polymerized hydrocarbon mixture, to neutralize said polymerized hydrocarbon mixture at 10.degree. to 100.degree. C.; (C) further adding an activated clay in an amount of 0.1 to 20 parts by weight based on 100 parts by weight of said polymerized hydrocarbon mixture, to treat said neutralized hydrocarbon mixture with said activated clay at 10.degree. to 100.degree. C.; and (D) hydrogenating said hydrocarbon mixture treated with said activated clay.

Process for preparing hydrogenated hydrocarbon resin

Provided is a carpet tile produced by using as a backing material a mixture which contains a solvent deasphalted asphalt and a copolymer of an olefin and a polar monomer, or a mixture which contains an amorphous polyolefin in addition to the above components. After applying the mixture as a hot melt to the back of carpet material, the backed carpet material is cooled and then cut or punched to produce the carpet tile.

The invention relates to a pressure-sensitive adhesive composition which comprises a rubber component including at least 50 percent by weight of styrene-butadiene copolymers in combination with a resin component consisting of an aromatic hydrocarbon resin resulting from the polymerization of a thermally cracked petroleum fraction at temperatures in the range of -30.degree. to +60.degree. C. in the presence of Friedel-Crafts catalysts. The fraction as recovered from petroleum refining has a boiling range of 140.degree. to 220.degree. C. but is further fractionated to separate components boiling above and below about 180.degree. C. The material which is reacted has a conjugated diolefin content of 0.7 weight percent or less, and a ratio of conjugated diolefin content to total polymerizables of 3% or less. The total content of indene and its alkyl derivatives is 2 weight percent or less, and the ratio of indene content to total polymerizables is 8% or less. The fraction also contains significant amounts of vinyl toluenes boiling from 168.degree. to 171.degree. C.

Pressure-sensitive adhesive compositions

Polyvinyl acetate compositions are provided for use as adhesive and coating agents and contain plasticizers readily available from aromatic compounds, which plasticizers are highly compatible with polyvinyl acetate and free of toxic components.

Plasticized polyvinyl acetate compositions

A clay pigeon used as a target in trapshooting or skeet shooting which is made by molding a composition comprising low molecular weight thermoplastic resin, high molecular weight thermoplastic resin and inorganic powdered filler, and if desired, additives, pigments and/or antioxidants are added to the composition. The clay pigeon is itself light colored without the need for a light coloring finish and contains no noxious material.

A hot melt adhesive composition is disclosed, which is highly adhesive and thermally stable. The composition includes a tackifying resin which is an aromatic hydrocarbon resin resulting from the polymerization of a thermally cracked petroleum fraction boiling in the range of 140.degree. -220.degree. C in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. The resin is blended with ethylene copolymers and various waxes to form a hot melt adhesive compound.

Polychloroprene type adhesive compositions comprising (1) an acid-modified hydrocarbon resin, (2) polychloroprene, and (3) suitable additives such as metal oxides and anti-aging agents, together with, if desired, (4) known resins for polychloroprene type adhesives, such as alkylphenol resins and petroleum resins, and (5) a volatile organic solvent.

A polychloroprene-base adhesive composition having a long retention time of tackiness without lowering of adhesive strength, which consists of: (1) resinous material having a softening point of 145.degree.C or higher being obtained by polymerization of a cracked oil fraction; (2) polychloroprene; (3) additives such as metallic oxides and antioxidants; (4) conventional additive resins, if necessary; and (5) volatile organic solvent.
