An exhaust system for a vehicle engine having the catalytic converter structurally mounted on the side of the engine for rigid, non-vibrating support and a flexible tube connecting the catalytic converter to the engine exhaust for absorbing vibrations and accommodating thermal expansion and contraction.

Catalytic converter mounting structure for engines

A system for collecting and catalytically cleaning exhaust gases from an engine which is particularly suited for an arrangement wherein the catalyst is in close proximity to the exhaust ports of the engine. Exhaust pipes are employed having common walls extending longitudinally therethrough to separate and convey exhaust gases from two separate cylinders to a common manifold. The manifold is arranged to provide a mixing of the exhaust from a plurality of cylinders and to direct that homogeneous flow to the catalyst. A restriction is provided at the outlet of the manifold chamber and before an expansion chamber into the catalyst. This outlet and the expansion chamber are designed to provide maximum efficiency in distribution of gases to the catalyst and also provide minimum gas flow disruption and back pressure.

Exhaust system

The converter casing includes a hollow cylindrical body in which a monolithic catalyst substrate is supported by a wire-mesh cushioning element. Secured to the casing body are a pair of holding fixtures which are each fitted with an end cushioning element engageable with the adjacent end face of the catalyst substrate to hold the latter against axial displacement. The casing body includes a smaller-diameter portion, at least one larger-diameter portion and a sloped shoulder portion interposed therebetween. The holding fixtures are fixed to the larger-diameter or other end portions of the casing body in spaced relation to the cushioning element held between the catalyst substrate and the casing body. Such casing structure reduces the danger of the catalyst substrate being damaged or broken under vibration or shock to a minimum thereby to enhance the durability of the substrate and enables realization of a particularly compact and inexpensive catalytic converter.

The intake manifold for supplying air-fuel mixture from a single source to a plurality of cylinders of an internal combustion engine employs individual pipes all having the same cross sectional area but having different non-circular cross sectional contours. Where less fuel is needed at low engine speed and power output, the bottom half of each intake pipe is formed with a smaller internal radius of curvature than the top half. Where more fuel is needed at low engine speed and power output, the bottom half of each pipe is formed with a larger internal radius of curvature than the top half. The purpose is to better equalize the distribution of fuel to the cylinders under low speed and low power operation of the engine, without affecting fuel distribution at higher engine speeds.

Intake manifold for internal combustion engine

An arrangement for deriving intake negative pressure from an internal-combustion engine, comprising a carburetor in the latter, with an intake for an air -- fuel mixture, a throttle valve therein for regulating the mixture, and at least one longitudinal passage therein for guiding the mixture toward the engine; an intake passage leading from the carburetor to the engine; which latter also has an exhaust passage leading therefrom; wherein the throttle valve has a shaft substantially transversally disposed in one of the passages of the carburetor, the latter being fitted with a discharge opening in a side wall of the intake passage to derive negative passage from the carburetor for regulating and controlling the engine operation; the discharge opening being provided in the flow of the mixture, in an area that is directed downstream from the throttle-valve shaft; whereby to avoid accumulation and discharge of condensed fuel from the carburetor to the discharge opening. The arrangement can be associated with a control circuit for the engine, including pressure-responsive elements, as well as an air pump for delivering secondary air to the exhaust passage of the engine. According to an important feature of the invention, an insert member is interposed between the body of the carburetor and the intake passage, with a connecting tube being integrally formed in the insert member but projecting therefrom, which tube is in communication with the discharge opening.

Unequal fuel concentrations in air-fuel mixtures delivered by a downdraft carburetor to branched intake pipes leading to engine cylinders has been traced to asymmetrical fuel delivery into the venturi passage in the carburetor. To equalize the fuel concentrations carried in the branched pipes, an inclined wall is provided in the distribution chamber that receives the air-fuel mixture from the carburetor. The inclination of the wall directs a greater quantity of air-fuel mixture into the branched pipe which would otherwise receive a leaner mixture because of the asymmetrical distribution of fuel from the venturi passage.
