Disclosed is an aqueous coating composition which keeps in high nonvolatile contents during coating operation and is capable of being effectively applied even under a relatively high humidity condition. The coating composition imparts high orientation of metallic pigment particles to the cured film. The aqueous coating composition of the present invention comprises a specific acryl polymer varnish (a) and a specific urethane oligomer dispersion.

The present invention provides a water borne metallic coating composition which stably disperses a metallic pigment and provides good metallic appearance independently of coating conditions. The water borne coating composition of the present invention comprises a specific film forming polymer (I), a specific fluorine containing compound (II), a metallic pigment (III), a crosslinking agent (IV), a compound (V) selected from the group consisting of a phosphorus containing titanate coupling agent and a phosphoric mono- or di-ester of a C.sub.11- C.sub.24 organic compound.

The invention concerns a method for forming a coating with excellent adhesion, water resistance and appearance which comprises the combination of steps of applying on the hydrophobic surfaces having a surface tension of 35 dyne/cm or less of a substrate a dry surface treatment selected from vacuum plasma treatment, corona discharge treatment and ozonization treatment, coating thus treated surfaces with a dispersion type aqueous coating composition comprising an aqueous varnish of at least one aqueous resin whose 1 wt % deionized water solution has a surface tension of 51 dyne/cm or less and which has a water tolerance of 4 or more, and water insoluble resin uniformly dispersed in fine particles in said varnish, the water insoluble resin having a SP value which is 1.0 to 2.2 lower than that of said aqueous resin, and baking the coating. The present method is specifically useful in the coating of automobile bodies, appliances and other high-quality products.

Film forming method

An aqueous coating composition comprising (A) an aqueous medium, (B) at least one water soluble or dilutable resin which has a water tolerance of 4 or more and whose 1% by weight aqueous solution shows a surface tension of 51 dyne/cm or less, and (C) fine particles of resinous solution of water insoluble resin in a hydrophobic solvent, the particles being uniformly dispersed in the combination of said aqueous medium (A) and the water soluble or dilutable resin (B) and having a mean diameter of 1.mu. or less, which is characterized in that the absolute value of difference in solubility parameter (.vertline..DELTA.Sp.vertline.) between said resinous solution and said water soluble or dilutable resin is within a range of .vertline..DELTA.Sp.vertline.&lt;2. The present coating composition is excellent in storage stability and application characteristics, resulting a coating with excellent gloss and surface smoothness.

An aqueous coating composition which comprises an aqueous resin having a carboxyl group (I) and a water-insoluble resin powder (II), the aqueous resin (I) being the one dispersible or soluble into an aqueous medium by ionization when the carboxyl group is neutralized with a basic substance, and the water-insoluble resin powder (II) being the one of 5 to 100 in acid value obtained by reaction between a carboxyl group-containing resin of 20 to 300 in acid value in a solid state at room temperature and a monoepoxy compound or a monoisocyanate compound.

A process for preparing resinous particles for a coating composition, which comprises the steps of (1) subjecting an aqueous resin composition having an ionic group and no material solubility or dispersibility in water is dissolved or dispersed in an aqueous medium by at least partly neutralizing the ionic group to treatment with a powdering agent while applying thereto an operation for pulverization to deposit the resin in a particulate form and (2) recovering the deposited resinous particles from the aqueous medium.
